blood in amniotic fluid

Just heard of someone at 20 week scan being told there is blood in the amniotic fluid and the outlook is not good?

I've never heard of this before - has anyone else? Anyone know what the cause could be?

Sorry I've no idea.

I wonder how they could tell?

I've not heard of this before either. Has she had any other problems with the pg?

My mum had an amniocentesis when she was pregnant with my sister and there was blood in the amniotic fluid. She was told that blood in the fluid normally comes from the mother, not the baby, and that usually there is no problem with the pregnancy.

The pregnancy was fine, and my sister is now 25.

Lots of blood in mine (2nd pregnancy) which was probably because I had had a couple of bleeds early on. The scanners were absolutely emphatic that in my case it was totally normal and OK and absolutely nothing to worry about. They weren't even interested in talking about it! It was easy to spot on the scan, even I could see it floating about in the fluid. It was all my old blood and dd was prefectly, bouncingly healthy. However, this might be something totally different with a totally different outlook. I really hope your friend is OK.
