Pregnancy

Anaemia - am I worrying unneccesarily?

I'm 12 weeks PG with LO3, my last pregnancy was ten years ago so I have sort of forgotten everything... I had a letter from my midwife today saying I was "slightly anaemic" with a iron blood level of 0.2g. I had a Google, and found the "normal" level is between 12 and 16g... Do I sound a little more than "slightly anemic"? I don't want her to think I'm a hypercondriac (sp?), but 0.2g doesn't sound like much... Oh, I've been taking Pregnacare vits since 2 months before conception. Thanks.

Hi! Bluesunday. I would say that if it was that low, you would have nothing left. I don't think you would have received a letter, you would have been admitted to hospital.

I am 16=1 and my iron is 11.2 and I am 'slightly' anaemic, the midwife said 'lower side of normal'. I am on iron tablets. I generally suffer with anaemia even when not pregnant.

I would say that this '0.2g' is maybe a part of the blood count reading.

I think you should call your midwife in the morning and ask her to explain the readings in the letter, and ask if you need to take an iron supplement.

I wouldn't worry too much, if it was cause for concern they would definately have telephoned you and taken immediate action.

That's what I was thinking, 0.2g makes me think I'm at death's door!
I'll ring her in the morning, maybe it's a typo???

Presumably, it's a typo (10.2 is slightly low) or a reading of something else. I had an iron level of 7 post em cs and was severely anaemic and v poorly indeed. When slightly anaemic, it was 10.2. Around 9 and I become very symptomatic.

You don't have an iron level of 2. Ring in the morning and check it out.

Don't panic, the levels you googles (11-16) are your haemaglobin levels, which is the definition of anaemia. You become anaemic because of low iron levels which is what your midwife has told you about... So you'll just need to take iron tablets and you'll be fine xx

I phoned the midwife just now, and it WAS 10.2g, she said I'd be at death's door if it was 0.2g... bloody typo! Thanks for your comments X
