Pregnancy with the Mirena Coil fitted!?!

Just something niggling away at me at the moment....

I had the coil fitted in January this year and haven't had any problems. I still get periods, but no period pains and less PMT.

Anyway, as I was walking through to the kitchen on Tuesday night to pour myself a G&T I shouted through to DH "Good God I'm so tired and have a really horrible metallic taste in my mouth!".... I froze on the spot in terror at the prospect that I could be pregnant! I ran to bathroom and checked the threads are still there and they are.

SURELY I couldn't possibly be pregnant?!? It couldn't really happen at a worse time. DH and I not getting along.... all my other family problems...... and I'm about to start a new job.

Has anyone got pregnant with the Mirena coil fitted???

>hoping for lots of NO WAY answers here<

I know it's not what you want to hear but I did! Perhaps do a test just to be on the safe side?

I remember Sue who lives on the island in Scotland did (I think it was her- husband GP, bad PND, kidney trouble...what happened to her?). I think her Mirena came out/ dislodged itself into her cervix though, so if your strings are still there I'd say unlikely.

It's possible, but no probable. Take a test.

Toothache Thu 28-Jul-05 10:58:43

OMG Anchovies!!

Was the Mirena still firmly in place?? What made you test??? Was the baby okay??????????

Tissy - Sobernow??

Toothache Thu 28-Jul-05 11:00:25

Right I'm shaking now!!

I had such sore boobs the other day that I almost couldn't put my bra on!! I thought I'd pulled a muscle. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG. Will buy a test on the way home tonight.

Have I said OMG yet??????

Tissy Thu 28-Jul-05 11:00:57

has she changed her name? I'm having trouble keeping up...thought sobernow was around back then, though!

Yep was still completely in place. Just had a funny feeling I was pg so tested. Eventually as he got bigger the threads dissapeared. Ds was fine, born by em cs and the surgeon couldn't believe I wasn't interested when he fished my coil out. Strangely I ws more impressed with ds!

Flossam Thu 28-Jul-05 11:02:27

You poor thing. I can completely understand your sinking feeling! When all the pieces suddenly seem to fit together. I was alright, my AF arrived a few days late. But I know what you are going through. Buy the test, and I hope you get the result you want. xx

anchovies Thu 28-Jul-05 11:04:04

It is very very unlikely that you would be. Will be thinking about you and as flossam said, hope you get the result you want.

Toothache Thu 28-Jul-05 11:05:36

And again Anchovies [horror emoticon]!!!

Tissy - Actually I think I'm getting mixed up but I know who you mean.

Oh Toothache...

You probably don't want to be reminded of this, but Twinkie did...

SoupDragon Thu 28-Jul-05 11:07:51

It was susanmt I think, who has since skipped off to Guatmal or some suchplace

Toothache Thu 28-Jul-05 11:12:09

Oh god Dino I remember now!!!

This is terrible. I have never EVER in my life felt so afraid of being pg!!!!!

eefs Thu 28-Jul-05 11:28:11

def susanmt. (is she back yet?)
take a test!

dinosaur Thu 28-Jul-05 11:32:54

Toothache - really sorry you are having to endure all this, especially with the horrible situation with your dad. It never rains but it pours, eh.

Thinking of you, take care of yourself.

Toothache Thu 28-Jul-05 11:37:44

This cannot be happening.

21stcenturygirl Thu 28-Jul-05 11:45:46

Toothache I had exactly the same symptons 6/7 months after having mine fitted. I was convinced I was pg (horror of horrors). I even went to the clinic to get it checked and did so many negative pg tests. I wasn't - apparently the hormones in the coil (oetrogen/progesterone - can't recall which one) are the same hormones you have when you're pregnant - hence the pg symptons.

assumedname Thu 28-Jul-05 11:45:48

Yes.

Sorry to hear that you think you might be.

Tissy Thu 28-Jul-05 12:07:53

Guatamala?I wonder how I missed that! Explains why ~I never got my Morningwell tape back!

WideWebWitch Thu 28-Jul-05 12:09:02

Oh shit ta, hope this is a false alarm.

oliveoil Thu 28-Jul-05 12:11:18

Oh oh. Can you do a test today? I won't find out until Tuesday otherwise? <pout>

(but of course my feelings are uppermost at the mo....)

Toothache, I doubt it - the progesterone in the mirena may just be playing tricks on you with similar symptoms. I get pregnant very easily (the first month I've tried with all four of mine) but I didn't get pregnant using the mirena for a whole year (and only had two periods). I conceived this time a month after I had it taken out. Can you feel the threads?

Toothache Thu 28-Jul-05 12:16:52

lol OO - You sound like ME (when its happening to someone else!).

Rachael - yes the threads are still there and I think my period was about 2 or 3 wks ago, definitely not more than that. But my periods have been a bit strange (heavy one day, really light for the next 10days!!).

dizietsma Thu 28-Jul-05 13:45:44

I was conceived when my mother had a coil in. It is not unheard of.
