Just How Pregnant Am I?

OK, this is going to sound stupid, but it's my first pregnancy and I've only known since Thursday, but I'm really confused about how to count how pregnant you are.

My last cycle began on 26th Feb, so according to the information in the pregnancy calendar on this site I'm almost 7 weeks pregnant (ie you count it from the first day of your last cycle), but when I put my details into NHS choices it tells me I'm 5 weeks pregnant - so presumably it's counting it from roughly when I would have ovulated.

Which is the right way to count how pregnant you are?

The normal way is to count from the date your last period started, so 7 weeks preg in your case.

As already said, it's first day of your last period.

Congratulations x

Hi Giddy,
Congratulations on your BFP! You do count from your last period, but that really only works if you have a 28 day cycle. I don't and what's more I was in the middle of an incredibly long and random cycle when this pregnancy happened.

So, if you don't ovulate on day 14, it is probably better to just count two weeks for the length prior to ovulation/conception, regardless of how long it actually was. This would mean that on the day of your first missed period, you are four weeks pregnant (even if it has actually been longer since your last period).

Not sure if I am making sense here - but given that I ovulated on day 33 or something crazy of my cycle, using the date of my last missed period would be totally wrong in my case. About two weeks wrong. And it does matter, because if you go for a scan, you need to have some idea, because if you are supposed to be 7 weeks and the baby measures 5, it might be that they suspect something is wrong, when nothing is.

Hope this helps!
