Chickenpox

My stepdaughter has chicken pox and whilst both my husband and I have had it when younger we decided that it wasn't worth the risk of having her at our home until the contagious period has passed i.e. the scabs had crusted over.

My husband has now informed me that he wishes to visit her at her home. I completely understand that he wants to visit his daughter however we are due to have her in a few days time when she should be out of the risky stage. I'm aware that the risks of either me or my husband getting it twice are low but I do know people that have had it more than once and just don't think it's worth the risk. Is he right and I'm being unreasonable??

I have had chickenpox more than once but, despite my son contracting them whilst I was pregnant with DS2, I didn't develop anything.

I think the risk is very, very low. You have had chickenpox, and no doubt been exposed to it since then. It is very rare to get it more than once - I'm unusual!

For your husband, as he has had it when younger, he should not be a carrier either - so it should be safe for him to visit her and come home to you.

There are also 'safer' times in pregnany to get chickenpox - give your midwife/practice nurse a ring for advice. It is hard to keep perspective especially during pregnancy!

My son just had it and I have had before so was told its extremely unlikely I would catch it and I haven't. I read an article about it which did suggest that there are explanations for people getting it twice, quite often that it was miss diagnosed the first time.

I really wouldn't worry about him passing it onto you, if she was with you before the spots came out she could have been contagious. Was told it was contagious 5 days before the spots come out.

If you were feeling rubbish wouldn't you want to see your Daddy? I am a stepmum and I know it can be tough sometimes but I really think your husband is being reasonable about wanting to visit his little girl.
