Help!! 12 week scan showed exomphalos.

Hi DH and i went for our 12 week scan on Friday and it showed our babies bowel is growing outside its body. We lost our baby boy last year, so we have found this incredibly hard to cope with. I had a cvs on Friday and the first set of results will be on wed/thurs.
Does anyone have any experience of this as our heads and emotions are all over the place?

I am very sorry to hear about your little boy too. This can only add to your anxiety. Bumping for you and keeping my fingers crossed that someone who can advise comes along soon.

Sorry tp hear about this. I have known 2 sets of parents this has happened to and both children are now doing fine after a rocky start and a few ops. Hope it all goes OK for you.

oh how worrying my thoughts and prayers to you and your DH.

I have a friend who has just turned 30 and he was born with his bowels outside his body. He had a bit of a rough childhood due to ops but he's fab, fit and healthy.
Not sure if you watch One Born Every Minute on Channel 4 the first week of that show there was a woman who had a baby born with his bowels outside his body, i'm sure if you look on channel 4's website you'll find the details about them i'm sure the wee boy was named Jack.

Popsy1, so sorry to hear this. Exactly how far along are you? We had a scan at 11 weeks 4 days with DS which showed physiological exomphalos. We were told that it was 99% likely to rectify itself and to come back in a week to be rescanned which we did and it had gone. The herniation of the gut takes place between week 11 and 12 and I believe is usually complete by the end of week 12 so if yours was a few days early then the stomach wall could still be closing. Did they mention any of this to you? DS is now a 100% healthy gorgeous 2 year old.

Laura thats reassuring to hear about your friend. Yeah i google the one born every minute episode. She seemed alot calmer than i am right now!
gangle Lovely to hear that your DS is gorgeous and healthy. I was 11wks 3 days at the time of scan. They never mentioned a repeat scan at all until 19weeks. I have the reults of the cvs this week and then all being well know appointment til May!! It seems ages away, like we've just been left.

Popsy that seems really odd as everything we read said that some babies do still have the gut outside the body at that stage until it closes properly at the end of week 12/beginning of week 13. I wish I had never had the early scan (which was private) as by the time I had the NHS scan a week or so later it had gone, so we had all that worry for nothing. I guess CVS will confirm it either way though so maybe that's how they address it but sounds like another scan sooner rather than later could tell you either way. Take care and best of luck whatever happens. As others have said, many babies born with this make a full recovery. Have you searched other posts in MN? I found loads of helpful stuff when this happened to us and people with similar experiences which were so reassuring and got me through a horrendous few days. xx

Thanks again Gangle I think we will wait and see what the results show and then find out where to go from there! I have found a little on mumsnet but i've mainly been on the GEEPS site. Lots of success stories and experiences, all a little scary though.

Gangle i've just read all the posts and it has helped slightly. I cant help but wonder why they haven't offered me another scan after 12 weeks. On my notes it says large exomphalos, so maybe its not going to go in on its own. Its such a horrible feeling.

I hope others add their experiences to my thread like they did yours.

My DP was born with gastroschisis - not sure what the difference is between that and exomphalos, but DP is absolutely fine. Spent several weeks in hospital as a baby but perfectly healthy, just has a scar above his belly button.

Its so reassuring when i read successes, thanks gagmama as i posted earlier we seem to have been left without a great deal of info. So i've done my own on google, which has scared the life out of me.

When I was pregnant with dd2 we went along for the 12 week scan and they told me that I was only 11 weeks along and that it looked as though the bowels were still outside the body. They sent me for a CVS at a different hospital in a different town, my hospital doesn't do CVS, the following week. When they did the scan to do the CVS the DR there said that everything looked fine to him. Incidently I didn't get the CVS as dd2 was in a bad position,but I did get an amnio at a later date and all results came back fine. At the 19 week scan dd2 looked perfectly healthy. I went on to deliver a healthy baby girl.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Oh Linnet thats wonderful, i pray that my pregnancy turns out the same. I also had the cvs at a different hospital but on the same day.

Hi there,
Another Mum here of a bouncing baby crawling at speed , who had an exomphalos at an 11 week private scan, and by the time we had the NHS scan at almost 13 weeks, it had resolved. The private consultant we saw was really helpful and said (as other posters have) that it nearly always resolves and all babies initially have their intestines outside their body as some sort of evolutionary design flaw, and usually the body takes them back in again.
So sorry to hear of your loss of your son, and hope your pregnancy goes well.

Unfortunately it doesnt appear that the exomphalos on our baby is the type that corrects itself, it is too large.
I cant believe how long this week has been. The results seem to be taking ages.
Would love to hear some other experiences.

There was a baby who had the same (when it was born as well) on ITVs 'One born every minute.' a few weeks ago. That baby had an operation, but was ulimtately ok. Why don't you check out the ITV website for the programme, and see what happened to that baby? It has a really pretty mum who was blonde if you are looking for it on line. So sorry to hear you are having to go through this - I really hope things turn out well for you.

Thanks Ludlowlass we watched that one born every minute episode. Unfortunately our case isnt so straight forward. Since my last post we have had the results of the cvs, and it isnt good. Our baby boy has patau's syndrome, with little chance of survival.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and supportive posts over the last few days, you all really have helped.
