I want to moan please! I was only saying last week how I didn't feel pregnant at all, this week I can barely breathe for wanting to throw up. What can I do? Ginger biscuits are too sweet, ginger tea is revolting and dry toast makes me gag. Would anyone recommend travel sickness bands? I can wear them at home, but they might give something away at work. Any other ideas?

It's not confined to morning either, it's more like "most of the day sickness"

lollies helped me - kept my blood sugar up like fruit bursts but I wasn't as sick as what you are.

No advice BibiTwo, but lots of sympathy , am now 38 weeks and blooming, the first three months were definitely the worst for me! (and nothing seemed to relieve the sickness either - sorry!)

Hiya bibitwo! congratulations! i drank loads and loads of ginger ale/beer (as it comes!) but DO read the ingredients to make sure it does actually contain REAL ginger, as alot of these drinks have artificial ginger flavouring! - so obviously would do no good! also a top tip i was given by my sister was to sniff fresh orange or lemon (citrusy stuff) peel! - i have to say it worked!!!! its pretty strange and i cant explain how it works but its such a zingy fresh smell it just kind of uplifts you and makes you feel better, try and eat little and often too! you may feel like all food is stomach churning right now but if you let your stomach get empty the excess stomach acid makes you feel even worse!! so just try and top your tummy up with little things as often as you get chance!
Hope this lot helps!

Try travel bands - personally they didn't help me and I ended up on anti sickness tablets after being sick 24hrs a day all day every day to the point where I couldn't keep water down. If it gets too much go to your doctor, the tablets don't harm you or the baby and do help, although they don't stop you being sick they do help keep something down.

I am now 19wks today and still being sick, I find that cream crackers help so try those too.

Good Luck!

I've tried a few of the suggestions thanks, and can honestly say that ginger beer is revolting! Why did I think I liked it as a child? The smell alone made me gag this morning. But hey, if it works for some, then all hail ginger beer! The nausea was NEVER this bad with dd which leads me to believe that only a little man could make his mummy feel this bad!
Does anyone else just wish they would be sick and get it over with? I can't bear feeling so queasy to (seemingly) no end iykwim.
I am currently muching on Snack-a-Jacks as they are dry and bland enough to keep me from retching at the smell, and they stop the swirly-ness of my belly for a good 20 minutes. I've found so far, that eating little but often is working for me, although not sure it's healthy to eat a whole packet of M&S Viennese sandwich biscuits over the course of 3 hours, it was little and often though
Also, tea with a big sugar in it helps loads. I'm on decaf tea now and am glad to say it doesn't taste too different.

Work might object to me blacking out the lunch room windows and comandeering all the chairs to lie on! But worth a try first thing in the morning.

I found steeping a slice of lemon and some slivers of ginger in boiling water and then sipping (once cool) worked. Told work I was on a detox which they actually fell for. Also Anna's Ginger Thins were the ONLY ginger biscuits I could handle, being much the same on the ginger biscuits front.

Also as part of my "detox" I had bran flakes (dry) to snack on.

Congratulations!!! I found a bottle of Pepsi-Max and a packet of mini-cheddars every morning helped! Can't give you any scientific reasoning behind it, but it worked for me!!

Mini cheddars sound nice, might give thema try. Someone else mentioned Hula Hoops so i might stock up on them too. I love them!

Hi! My GP advised almonds, and have to say, it really helped. Also good for heartburn later on...

BibiTwo, if its any comfort, I used to throw up all the time and it didn't make me feel any better. If you have a tummy but and you throw up, you've gotten rid of the irritant and you feel better but if you throw up when you're pregnant, you're still pregnant afterwards! I found cracottes a bit of a help. And flat 7 up.

I was ill with both pregnancies.Throwing up each time till 5 months.1st time I was admitted twice as tried to eat (was scared baby would starve)and made myself worse.2nd time more relaxed about it and avoided hospby drinking v small amounts and remaining hydrated.I was off work the whole time and spent most of it in bed.Lost over two stone each time so great for figure!!

Saying that I survived and am now TTC so cant be all that bad

Hi BibiTwo. I had it bad like Chocoloatepeanut. Ginger made me worse. I found green tea good. Also cup-a-soups. Couldn't bear anything sweet. My sympathies to you. X

I was lucky personally, but a friend of mine had very bad sickness first time around (ended up on a drip in hospital for quite a while). She swore by bacon sandwiches second time round, starting before she got up in the morning, and had a relatively uneventful pregnancy. You might find that complex carbs/protein in small amounts regularly (evey couple of hours) work better than sweet things which will give you a sugar low (which can also make you feel sick). I guess at the end of the day you probably have to experiement and see what works for you.

loobywoof · 20/07/2005 22:26

I found sipping from a small bottle of lucozade very helpful. I think the key thing is to keep your blood sugar up. Eating something sweet right before bed at night also allowed me enough non sick time in the morning to get out of bed and get to the cereal. Even so I puked at least once almost every day for nearly 7 months with both pregnancies.

i was sickness free ish with my first but horrendous with my second....both boys!

I wore travel bands for months, they took the edge off the nausea. it didn't go away but it was bearable just about.i think they do black ones now but i couldn't find any

Also little and often food wise is supposed to help and as someone has suggested protein and complex carbs. so go buy a ready cooked chicken from sainsbury and munch thru'out the day lol!!!

u could try sniffing bachs rescue remedy...worked for a friend so woth a try. apparently its safe and effective to calm labour anxiety too (i would check that with mw tho)

Failing that carry a plastic bag (with no holes in the bottom lol!!!!)around with u and hope no one heres u retching!

hope it stops soon its not nice!

this is what my gp sugested and it was the Only thing that somehow helped.
buy a tin of fruit, any kind u like best.i got del monte's tinned peaches.and sip the syrup, tiny little sips.and when u feel u can handle this, try a sliver of the fruit.the trick apparently,is to trick your stomach into thinking ure not having any food!
good luck with everything!

For me the bands worked.

The only things I could eat were oranges and rich tea biscuits.
Someone bought me some ginger sweets and even now the smell of them makes me want to throw up.

I've heard that if you cut a lemon in half next to your bed helps for the morning too.

the only thing that would stop me from being sick was a piece of bread first thing with butter or flora on. very strange but very true

Sympathy. See previous threads on this subject. Things that helped me:-

  • Sucking a hard sweet with a mild flavour like butterscotch.

  • Sipping ice cold water or sucking ice cubes.

  • Making myself eat something

  • Most things were easier to get down if chilled, even bananas, I think because it suppresses the smell.

  • Long baths (immersing myself at the swimming pool helped at first but later on I couldn't cope with the chemical smell).

  • Sleeps.

Throwing up didn't help at all.

Don't know if the acupressure band helped because I was too scared to take it off just in case.
