Pregnancy

I don't even know why I'm asking but....

So, I'm 26 weeks and I'm finding it hard to sleep.

I've got a maternity pillow thing but I still get sore hips if I lie on either side too long. It's not the easiest thing in the world to turn over either, what with a bump, the stupid pillow between my knees, the needing to pee every time I move and the heartburn but anyway....

My husband says that when I turn over in my sleep I do it really violently i.e. go up in the air and crash down on my other side (and he's right, it's the only way I can turn)

But he said today he's worried about it hurting the baby and I should try to move more gently...this has pissed me off no end, there are far worse things I could be doing, plus if I do it in my sleep, what's the point of telling me? I can't change it ,and it only serves to make me feel guilty.

Or am I wrong, and should I try to move more gently?

I'm sure I'd roll my eyes if I saw someone else posting this so please feel free...am sure I am having a hormonal day.

I don't think much you can do about it TBH its in your sleep, and he's being very very unreasonable stressing you out over this when you are already having trouble sleeping.

Which pillow have you got - I have found the full length one the most comfortable?

Also try listening to the natal hypnotheraphy before you go to sleep... can also use the homeopathy sleep tabs and the bach night time spray.

Don't worry, your baby is well padded, with amniotic fluid, your uterus, muscle layers and a fat layer covering it. You will not hurt your baby turning over, no matter how "violently" you do it, in your sleep.

Any chance that he isn't worried about you hurting the baby (which is SO not going to happen if you aren't even waking up), he is annoyed at being woken up himself? In which case he can just shut it.

Don't worry about how you roll over, baby won't care at all.

I used to have to turn over very regularly, but could only manage it by sitting up and then laying down on the other side. I got very good at doing it while still asleep and, yes, it did make the mattress bounce distressingly.

Sympathy to you Foxy. I'm 29 weeks and been having very similar problems for the last few weeks. DH bought me a maternity pillow and I can't use it! It gets in the way and I end up too hot. And it was making me more achy, bizarrely. I just use it to prop me up on the sofa now. But I do get sore ribs if I lie too long on either side, then do the sit-up-flop-down-turnover.

Turn however you like. According to DH, I breathe too loudly in my sleep (not snoring, mind, just breathing...) Apparently it's really worrying because I sound like I'm hyperventilating. I'm sure if it was that bad, I'd wake up, but let's not go down that road again eh?

DP moved out of the bed about this stage last time. It was the only thing that kept us sane. He made a comfy bed on the floor with duvets. This time I'm only 13 wks and he's already sleeping on a futon. Not kidding! It works for us both. I don;t have to worry about sitting up with heartburn, waking him by getting up to wee, crunching crackerbread in his ear, etc.

Your DH is talking shit. And like you say, you're asleep - what exactly are you going to do about it?

I'm 22 weeks and keep waking up to find myself asleep on my tummy. Slightly to one side, but on my front all the same.

I talked to my yoga teacher about the hip thing, and she said the best thing to do is to use a pillow under your top leg, but to try to lie at an angle so that all your weight isn't on the hip joint. Does that make sense? Might be worth a go. For what it's worth, I've been getting it too and it's horrible. I'm coveting one of these but at £75 it's not going to happen...

If it is in your sleep then you don't actually have any control over it.

I wouldn't be worried about the baby, but I find now at 39 weeks if I try to roll over too quickly it really hurts me.

I make poor DH "hold" the baby when I am on my left side, I lean the bump onto him so he can have the weight for a bit.

One eyed monster? Ha ha, he'd be lucky at this point!

He did admit to his comments being slightly due to having a rubbish sleep, but I have to put up with it so he can shoosh.

I got a long pillow thing from ebay for 11 bucks which I use to put my leg on. It does help a bit, but oh my god, my hip!!!!

Ah well, shall stop moaning now.

Thanks ladies!!!

Hi foxy

I have SPD and find it quite hard to turn in bed too (for the same reason as you plus pain). I read somewhere to buy some satin pyjamas and satin sheets as it helps sliding a bit which makes turning easier. I have to say it does work and makes it easier to turn without completely waking up. It is just a shame I can't find a satin cover for the stupid pillow!
