Help - fell downstairs earlier. Come and reassure me

I fell downstairs at work at lunchtime today - I'm 16 weeks. Rationally I think everything is probably fine: I'm not bleeding or cramping (though of course I'm really noticing every little twinge at the moment). Judging from the location of the bruises I landed mainly on my left knee and hip. I rang the hospital and they said make an appointment with my GP - can't get a GP appointment till Thursday, which seems pointless as I'm due a scan on Friday anyway. Come and tell me you've done the same thing and everything was fine!

Hi, i ve managed to fall over twice since finding out im pregnant. The last time being just over a week ago when i slipped on an icy pavement. Im 23 weeks and was worried stupid. I rang my midwife and she said that as long as there is no blood or cramping the chances of any serious injury was really slim as baby is so well protected in there. I was worried over every twinge that i felt that afternoon but to be honest i think my nerves were the main cause of them. If your really worried then just go down your local hospital and ask for a scan, even just a listen to babys heart beat will reassure you no end. Its always better to be safe than sorry. x

TBH don't think hospital will give me a scan (or even a quick check with a Doppler) just for the asking - they're not exactly flexible if you haven't got an appointment. I did try ringing them but they just sent me off to the GP. Very of your being able to identify "your" midwife Dizzygirl - the setup where I am is v. impersonal!

As soon as i found out i was preg and had got it verified by the docs i was assigned a midwife at my 1st appointment. I can call her when ever i want as well. One of my friends in London says the same as you though that she doesn t have anyone particular to call if she needs to speak to someone. Another one of those brilliant postcode lottery type cock ups!!
As for not seeing you at the hospital i would just go straight down there and ask to be scanned. Tell them your really worried, the chances of them refusing you are slim to none. Just because they deal with this sort of stuff everyday doesn't make it any less a stressful situation for you. Bloody doctors!!!!

I had a bit of a panic a few weeks ago (I was about 30 weeks) when I fell off a roundabout, landing on my back and pulling my 3 year old DD on top of me, I had a few bruises but no cramping/bleeding and have had no problems since.

Was very having to explain it to the midwife though, and now it's on my maternity notes for all to see what a wally I am!!

Also, when pregnant with DD I had a minor car crash and just turned up at the hospital as I was a bit worried, they put me on a monitor thing for about half an hour just to check all was well - they might do something like this for you...? Good luck

I slipped over getting out the shower when I was about 25 weeks pg. Cried all the way to see the midwife who said baby was fine as hadn't fallen directly on tummy and cos there's so much fluid around the baby.

Oh dear, sympathies to you OP.

Funnily enough I was on another thread about falling over in pg earlier on and I've c&pd below what I posted there:

"I had a nasty fall going down the stairs of a bus when I was 11 weeks pg. The driver braked really suddenly because he was zooming past the stop I had already dinged the bell for.

The bus had to be stopped. Witnesses came forward and gave me their details. The police came. An ambulance was called. I was taken to hospital. I had a couple of days off work and had a huge black and blue bruise across the small of my back (I fell backwards onto the steps).

But little unborn dd was just fine. And the person who scanned me said it was very very rare for a fall or external injury to cause a problem such as miscarriage. The little things are well protected in there."

I hope that is of some reassurance to you .

Thanks so much for replies - it's reassuring to know that others have done similar things and been fine. I'll call in at the hospital on the way to work tomorrow and see if I can get anyone just to check for the heartbeat.

Another one who fell over when PG here: I was about 25 wks and tripped over a piece of wire on a dark campsite, fell smack on my bump! Unborn DS kicked furiously when I sat up, and I rang NHS Direct and the MW the next day, both of whom said that babies are well protected in there, and as long as there was no bleeding or cramping and still plenty of movement there shouldn't be anything to worry about.
DS is 5 now btw, no ill effects at all.

Hi. hope you're ok!
I had a fall about 25 weeks and wasn't hurt at all. however, they encouraged me to go into hosp for monitoring mainly because I am Rh neg. I got an anti D jab as a precaution but all was well anyway. are you rh neg?

No, I'm rhesus +ve so nothing to worry about from that point of view.

I think you'll be fine, petsville. glad you have a scan coming up. just watch yourself in the next couple of days for anything unusual. but, as the others have said - baby is well protected in the uterus.
take care.
