Anomoly Scan - How many weeks were / will you be when you have yours?

Hi All,

Just what the title says really! I've had a little fight with my ultrasound deparmtent becasue they say they dont do the anomoly scan before 20 weeks (optimum time 20 - 22 weeks) because the fetus tends not to be in the right positon and not everyhting has developed propoerly. However, the guidelines say optimum time is 18 - 20+6...

We are going on holiday for the whole of my optimum time and have had to fight to get a scan before 20 weeks - i will be 19+2 by LMP but 19+5 by dating scan (hospital going on LMP) - which they have agreed to reluctantly but said that i might have to come back later to be re-scanned.

What have your experiences been?

Where I live it's at 21w. I know someone who's antenatal care is in London and she had hers at 24w. Not a lot you could do then if, God forbid, something was wrong. I happended to have a full anomoly scan at 18w too for other reasons and baby certainly seemed developed enough for them to do their stuff.

Hi Lotus

I had my planned anomoloy scan at 20+3, was told it was to be done as soon as possible AFTER 20 weeks.

However, the baby was laid face down and curled up in a ball with her legs tucked up, so they couldn't do all the checks, and I ended up going back a week later, at 21+3.

19 +1 sorry - it was brought forward for some unknown reason (but I was very grateful) I am finding that everything depends on where you live in england as to what guidelines they have. But, scan was fine anyway.

I have mine booked for next week so will be 20+3 (was told to book it for the my 20th week). If they are willing to rescan later if necessary then that sounds workable.

I've had one at 19 weeks before, just the date the hospital gave me.

This one I'll be 19+5.

I had my scan at 20 weeks then had to go back last week at 22 weeks so they could complete the scan. The sonographer was training a student and said to them that 20 weeks can still be too early. I am expectig twins though so that had complicated matters slightly.

Mine is booked for 21+6. Not that pleased, would rather have it sooner, but I don't think there is any choice. This is at the Royal Free in London.

I'm in East Sussex and at my local hosp they scan at 21+ weeks. Have mine bkd for 2.5wks when I will be 21+3. Would've liked it earlier as v impatient and desparate to have some clue as to boy/girl!!

HI Ladies, Thanks so much for all your replies! And i am a little reassured that others have had an 'early' scan and everything has been clear. It's so strange how different trusts have different time frames to do the scans in isn't it? You'd think that there was a agreed weeks + days but it really doesn't seem to work like that!

Thanks again

Hello, hope I'm not too late to add to this. I was told that it should be after 20 weeks but I had mine at 19+5 because I was going on holiday for three weeks. The hospital were fine with it. There was no problem doing all of the checks.

They do cardiac scans around 18 weeks so they must be able to see an awful lot in detail by then
