Pregnancy and cat litter

I found 2 abandoned kittens the other day, and we have decided to keep them.
However, there is a slight chance I may be PG.
My DH is not around much at the moment, so there is only me to do cat litter duties.
I've been using a bag to pick it up, so there's no contact - will this be OK?

The advice I have been given (we've got two cats) is to also wear gloves (marygolds or similar) and make sure you wash your hands properly afterwards.

Seaglass, could you get tested for toxoplasmosis antibodies? It may well be that you've already had toxo at some point in your life (the symptoms in healthy adults are similar to a very mild cold), in which case you'd be immune. I have two cats as well (but unfortunately no immunity).

Otherwise, always use gloves and wash thoroughly afterwards.

And congatulations on the adoption!

Iirc you are better to change it every day if pos because it takes a day or so for the poo to become infectious ( or at least remove the poo with one of those shovel thingys and gloves).

We had only just got our kitten when I found out I was pg. Then dh promptly went away to work on Euro 2000 for four weeks (thanks dh) so I had to do all litter tray duties. I had a dedicated pair of heavy duty marigolds which I wore every time I went near the litter tray, which I kept well out of the way in our back lean-to, and washed my hands really thoroughly every time even though I'd been wearing gloves.

The biggest problem was coping with the smell and contents of the tray whilst suffering from heaving morning sickness. That was rather grim.

I don't even know yet if I am PG - I think the symptoms are all in my head at the moment
Luckily for me, I have a terrible sense of smell!
Thankyou all - I was half expecting to be told that the kitties would have to go!
