Probiotics while pregnant?

I took probiotics pre-pregnancy as they helped a lot with IBS and preventing thrush. Now I'm getting symptoms of both back and would like to start taking probiotics again but not sure if they're safe for pregnancy? Everything I read says they are but to check with your GP/midwife first.

Has anyone else spoken to GP/midwife about this or is taking or taken probiotics while pregnant? My next midwife appointment isnt for a couple of weeks. Thanks.

I did, for the last month or so of pregnancy, without any problems. Supposed to reduce chance of baby getting eczema.

If you are worried, you could try just eating live yogurt.

Thanks for your replies. Mrswee, I try to eat yogurt regularly and tried those yakult and yogurt type drinks but doesn't work as well as probiotic capsules for me. The probiotic capsules are brilliant.

I figure the same thing dal21, they are just bacteria you have in your gut anyway, but just wondered if anyone had been recommended a type/brand to take or been told not to take them?

I'm on the solray (think that's the brand) probiotic capsules £12 for 60. I've not been told not to take them and my midwife is aware I use them.

I'm taking boots pregnancy vitamins(Mum to be Advanced) which have got probiotics in them so i would be very surprised if you couldn't have them at all. Maybe you can only have a particular type/dose

I have the Boots Probiotic and Prebiotic Capsules in the fridge (not pregnancy ones - just plain probiotic capsules) and I think I'll just take a half dose until I see the midwife. If they are in pregnancy vitamins (and sounds like midwives don't have a problem with them) then i guess they should be okay. Thanks for your replies everyone.

Yes I wondered this and so I checked, I was told it's fine and I also read somewhere that some study has shown it's good for the baby too.

I also asked my obstetrician about this and he said it was fine. I took a probiotic supplement throughout my whole pregnancy with no problems.
