20 Week Scan - Sex Determination

Hello

I went for my 20 week scan today (I am 20 weeks and 2 days) and was told that they are 70% sure I am having a girl.
When I asked the sonographer if we could find out the sex she said 'maybe but I may not be able to tell'. I was under the impression it was pretty obvious by 20 weeks. When I had my first child they were pretty definate at telling me she was a girl and I was kind of expecting the same thing to happen this time round My scans have been at different hospitals - Im not sure if this makes a difference.
I was in there for ages as she couldnt get the baby to get in the right position for a profile shot of its face so would have thought as we were there for so long she would have had more opportunity to assess what I was having. At the end when I asked her what I was having she said 'I didnt see any boy bits, Id say I am 70% sure its a girl but dont buy any dresses as I am not sure'!.
Whilst I am obviously thrilled that the baby appears healthy and normal, I am a little disappointed at not having a more definate answer. I dont want to get excited about having a girl only to have a boy or vice versa!
Has anyone else had experience of these kind of statistics? What was the outcome?

the baby might not have been in a great position to see the gender well enough

IME, when a sonographer is sure, they will tell you and vice versa

I would hang fire on buying pink, TBH.

if you are very keen to know, i would pay for a private scan

I had a boy and a girl, and was told with absolute certainty both times what i was having

did you ask her before or during the scan to find out the gender?

I asked her before we went in for the scan. Yeah like you say when they are really sure they say so as they did with my first!

in that case, she probably could not tell you with any more accuracy than 70 %

if she had to spend more time on the baby;s face etc. then won;t have had more time to look at it's bits & bobs
