Orgasms when pregnant.

Am trying to decide if this is a mean thing to do or not!

Basically am almost 16 weeks and am feeling the odd flutter but nothing major (as is reasonable for this stage) anyhow my last pregnancy ended in MMC at 10 weeks so I am understandably anxious about this one too. Decided not to buy a doppler in the end as thought it would make me more anxious.

Anyhow I have discovered that if I have an orgasm the baby goes nuts and really reassures me its still in there alive and kicking (poor thing it must be like an earthquake!) so is it a bit mean to have orgasms to check the baby is still okay! It just seems so wrong on so many levels although on a positive side- orgasms increase blood flow to the area so maybe it'll mean my baby is getting extra oxygen and nutrients as a side effect.

Haha I think this should get an award for the weirdest post I have ever made on mumsnet!

God no, not in the slightest bit mean - orgasm till your heart's content! I think the seratonin or whatever is released after you climax gets passed onto the baby which is probably why it gets a bit lively. It benefits you both, you go for it!

having an orgasm increases the amount of oxygen the baby gets and also you will notivce the uterus goes hard as it contracts which helps strengthen it. so my mw told me or read somewhere.....
basically it is all good though i cant feel mine move at 20 weeks and it is my third! my tummy goes solid!

hehe! Yay! Perhaps I better only do it once a day for reassurance purposes- I mean getting a vibe out in the queue to the bank to check bub is okay is probably a bit much!

Oxytocin is also released at orgasm and that hormone is involved in bonding (both mother and baby and pair bonding) so technically am probably helping with the bonding process freaking out the poor child about it's libidinous parents!-

Yeah bethoo my uterus went into a hard lump it was a bit freaky! Yay so sounds like it could also help with childbirth. Right that's it then- an orgasm a day on prescription!

Orgasms are good for you and your baby. Enjoy yourself!

Thandeka well done for your weird post! I'm sure there are plenty of people out there wondering the same thing. After my MMC at 10 weeks last time I'm just about getting my confidence back to actually have sex at nearly 16 weeks. Orgasms when pregnant are really freaky aren't they! I never thought of using it as a way to check on the baby though!

I don't know if they are good for baby, but orgasms are AWESOME during pregnancy - extended and amplified.

I have found sex defo feels different- more intense and erm pleasurable! Orgasms feel much the same apart from the rock solid uterus and manic freaked out baby afterwards!

Cept last night's orgasm didn't result in a manic baby wobble so that freaked me out a little perhaps I shouldn't have used this as a baby check method!(tried again this morn- rock hard uterus which didn't really happen last night but no manic flutters) but hey I felt "pinches" yesterday which hurt and today I have felt an odd flutter so am going to try stop being so paranoid! Roll on the time when there are proper movements so I know its okay in there (then again a friend of mine had her rib kicked out by her baby! yerk!)

You guys probably didnt need to know how many orgasms I had in last 24 hours

On the subject... Has anyone else found it more difficult to orgasm while pregnant? I'm 15+2 and didn't at first (if anything the opposite) but now I'm meant to be 'blooming' and enjoying loads of sex, I'm finding it hard to orgasm and when I do, they are not as good.... Anyone else experience this, and any tips ladies on how to get it good again?!

Thandeka - have orgasms for fun, not to check on the baby ! You are bound to be nervous after your loss last time round, but instead of looking for reasons to prove the baby is ok, assume the baby is ok, unless you get any other information. Otherwise you will drive yourself totally potty over the next 24 weeks!

Well I have been doing this for about 5 months now (am now 39 weeks) with no ill effects.

I did have a week off last week due to possible pre-eclampsia which appears to be calming down - don't think the two were related! I had some last night and they didn't send me back into hospital - I had a really good night's sleep!

Like others, I've wanted lots of ressurance that the baby is moving about due to previous MC. This seems a win-win way of doing so. I did have a big, strong coffee at one point this pregnancy because I was worried that LO had gone quiet (and I was in meetings all day), but then he went completely bananas for an hour, giving me a whole different set of worries... so I went back to natural methods...

Thandeka thank you for a good chuckle at the thought of you flattening your batteries in the bank queue
