Those little phrases you cling to

Hi all,

I'm having a rotten time, and thought it would be nice to start a thread on those little phrases that you cling to and help you get though. Here's mine to start.

From a (male) physio who I say re pelvic girdle pain at 28 weeks and who advised me to move onto crutches. Said with a suitable amount of sympathy:

It's only for 12 weeks, and in the grand scheme of things 12 weeks is such a short period of time.

What are your phrases that are getting you through things?

not a phrase, but the bottle of champagne which my neighboours gave me and which is chilling in the fridge (am due in around 7 weeks)

'It cannot possibly go on any longer than X days'. Today, X=26.

X=days till my due date + 14 days to be overdue

"most women who go through childbirth choose to do it again so it can't be that bad"

Report
MrsBadger · 13/08/2009 12:49

'There'll be a lovely baby at the end of it all'

'It's only a phase' / 'This too shall pass' (also applicable to most child-related problems so remember for later use re newborn sleep, feeding etc)

Labour, even a really bad one, only lasts a day.

I'll second 'this too shall pass', Am hoping that will keep me going in the blur of newborn mania too

I heard one the other day which I plan to try and remember whilst in labour - 'every contraction you go through is one less before you get to meet your baby'

I'm hoping it will work and not make me too homicidal when my DP repeats it to me!

I've been saying "and this too shall pass" since before dd was born... over 5 years now... it's starting to wear a little thin

On childbirth: "Millions of women have been through this"

Sorry KingRolo but it could be 2 days (in my experience) or even 3! Still I suppose the point is that it does finish eventually

The X days is good when you get nearer the end, pity I still have 6 months to go

Morning sickness - It'll be gone by 12/14/16/18 weeks.

Now 19+5 and clinging on to my SIL's 20 week experience.

"They won't be little forever."

"We've all been there."

I remember when I fractured my spine coming off a horse and the six weeks until I was allowed to ride again seemed ENDLESS. Now, looking back, that time seems like a tiny drop in the huge ocean of my life.

I keep telling myself, this pregnancy will feel the same in a year's time.

"and this too shall pass" is another favourite quote.

When midwives say when your worrying about embarrassing yourself 'we've seen it all before'.

Unfortunately that doesnt make the thought of pooing myself any less mortifying.

GL for all those babies on their way soon, I'm not pg yet but will be ttc next month.

X is 41 though I'll be gutted if I go past 27 more days.

My husband inadvertently came up with a phrase to help me cope with my usual morning misery. I was eating breakfast when he asked me how I felt. I gave my usual answer, to which he replied "You're not allowed to wish you were dead, because then Little One would be dead too." I'm going to hold onto that each morning. Just a shame it won't work after the baby arrives!

They'll come when they're ready.
I had talked myself into believing I was going to be early so even though ds was only 4 days late it felt like I'd been drinking rasberry tea, eating pineapple and driving down cobbled streets for aaaaaages!!

"F*ck off and leave me alone" is working wonders for me atm.

Is it bad that what I have clung to most is the fact that I have spent so much time throwing up, I have put on very little weight and should look a hell of a lot better post natal than I have with either of the others?

Whilst I wouldn't wish how I'm feeling on anyone, it's kind of a relief to know I'm not the only one feeling like this.

This is such a planned and desperatly wanted baby that it feels like such a shock to be hating it all so much.

There had been lots of things I had expected re pregnancy but 'not really being able to leave the house' for 10 weeks wasn't one of them

the little phrase - 'the most likely to thing that will happen, is everything will be alright' for pg, labour and baby...

A friend told me once that what ever you're worrying about now, chances are in a year you wont be (you'll be onto something new by then!)I've found this comforting over the last few years, as it has always turned out to be true.

Little milestones are getting me through...

So first it was 6 weeks, then 10 weeks, then first scan, then the end of morning sickness (was about 15 weeks for me), then second scan, then 24 weeks, and now at 25 weeks, it is the end of August, as that will be 2 months until I go on Maternity leave (which can't come soon enough...).
