Pregnancy

8 Weeks pregnant and terrible acid indigestion!!!!

I'm 8 weeks pg. Have had morning sickness since 6 weeks. The ms seems to have gotten less intense the past few days (happened last time at 8 wks too).

Anyway, it has been replaced by acid indigestion . I feel like the acid from my stomach is burning my throat. I've tried gaviscon original tablets, not much better at all. Today I got some rennie dual action tablets and they have helped a little but I can still feel the burn... Have checked and both remidies i've tried are safe in pregnancy.

I've had a few small glasses of milk with no lasting effect. Don't want to drink too much as I read somewhere that if you drink too much milk for indigestion then your stomach goes in to overdrive and produces more acid as you can make it too alkaline...

Any ideas? I'm fed up!

I'm no decent help but I've popped in to give you some sympathy as I'm in the same boat. I'm 7/8 weeks pg and have awful nausea and have the acid thing as well. Today everytime the acid burns up my throat I'm getting the taste of soap in my mouth - lovely Sorry for lack of advice but hope it eases for you soon

It's totally pants isn't it?! I thought, oh good not much sickness today, then this! Had a cream cake this afternoon (gift from visiting family) and it has nearly killed me, no cream from now on then

Ah you poor things. Milk does work for me (am 9 weeks so sharing your pain), but as you say only in small amounts.

Other things working for me at the moment at least:

Fizzy water - you wouldn't think the gas would help, but weirdly it does seem to.

After-eight chocolates (other after-dinner mints are available) - must be the mint that's helping. Have discovered these are a sure-fire morning-sickness reliever. Downside - I have developed an attractive spare tire which is making hiding the pregnancy at work problematic.

Hope you both feel better soon.

I found the gaviscon liquid worked better for me than the tablets.
Actually used to dring the stuff out of the bottle

I'm drinking fizzy water... Don't have after eights but do have mints, might try one.

If no better i'll try the gaviscon liquid although it does make me wanna vom!

Go for Gaviscon Advance - stronger than the normal stuff and still fine to take during pg. I do sympathise. Am 39 weeks now and looking forward to getting rid of the heartburn almost as much as actually having the baby...

At least mints disguise the taste of the acid reflux.

Ah, tis so glamorous this pregnancy business.

I can only get fizzy drinks down me, water just makes the acid worse. Might try fizzy water for a change. Dairy and fruit make it worse and my appetite has disappeared which is such a shocker it's almost newsworthy Mints are working well for me too, DP is picking me some up on the way home from work tonight. Am farking miserable though as it's just relentless [pathetic emoticon]

Was gonna go for gaviscon advance/dual action but coop didn't have it. Will search some out tomorrow.

Char - That's whats so annoying, my appetite has gone too, I hardly fancy eating anything at all and now I have to avoid dairy and spicy and fruit etc, there's nothing left for me to eat argh!

You poor thing lilyloo, must have been awful! Didn't have this at this early stage last time. Had it later when ds was pressing on my stomach. It just won't naff off! Sucking a mint imperial now, seems to be diguising the taste a little. Have sent dh out for more milk too, he's so nice

I was just like Lilyloo! I had a giant bottle of it next to me in bed which I used to glug from (waiting for the spoon just took too long!).

My GP also prescribed Ranitidine tablets and I got the giant Gaviscon Advance bottles on prescription. Saved me a fortune!

For out and about I loved chewable Rennies.

Big sympathy!

If you go to the doctors get omeprazole. It's much better than anything else and it realy will sort you out

Poor you. Only skim read the replies, but has anyone recommended pineapple juice? Worked quite well for my heartburn.

Also, I found peppermint tea quite soothing (even though it's 'officially' for trapped wind...)

Ah not had those recommendations, will get some, thanks!

Be careful with peppermint tea, it can actually make heartburn worse because it relaxes the valve at the top of your stomach.

Report
McSnail · 25/07/2009 13:45

Really brettgirl? I didn't know that!

Report
Dalrymps · 25/07/2009 14:47

Oh no! Will keep away from that for now then. I had some the other day for trapped wind but it just made my ms worse!

second the Gaviscon Advance, I hate the liquid ones, but ti was the only thing that worked in my 2nd pg.

I used to have to hold my nose when I took it and then breathe really slowly to stop it from coming back up.

But it did really really work, I went through bottles of the stuff, oh and don't faff around trying to measure it, just a quick swallow from the bottle is fine.

I had this too from about 7 weeks (now 32 weeks) and it only got worse. I finally got a prescription for omeprazole, which does help, but doesn't kill it completely, and the giant bottles of gaviscon advance - had to laugh when the chemist included one of those dainty medicine spoons in the bag. I swig it straight from the bottle.

brettgirl2 · 25/07/2009 17:22

What dose are you on Liz? I took 40mg throughout my pg (as I do normally).
