How is it possible that I still feel so sick at almost 17 weeks? I don't feel like I can bear another day of it.

Oh dear, poor you. I felt sick for quite a long time in my first pregnancy - did eventually get better around 5/6 mths (and I didn't feel sick at all in 2nd preg).

I guess you've probably tried all the remedies but I'll list a few in case there are some you've missed:

Keep eating, regular amts every hr or so - low blood sugar can make you feel worse
Ginger (squash, beer)
Get a LOT of rest
I used to find lieing down when I htought I was going to be sick would help (stop) it sometimes
Dry crackers

If you feel really awful see your Dr.

I hope you feel well soon.

Oh you poor thing. I have had that with every pg. Get as much sleep as possible.

If you are struggling to keep things down, then see if your GP will prescribe you some liqiud food. I had Fortisip. It was a complete lifesaver. I lived on that for about 6 months. I just sipped it constantly. You have to remember to drink water too though else you will dehydrate.

I was only sick until 11 weeks with dd. That was great! I spend quite a lot of my time lying on my office floor, which is obviously uber-professional.

Thank you all for being so kind.

If it does last all pregnancy will it magically disappear as soon as I deliver?

I really feel for you and was in exactly the same position as you a couple of months ago. I thought the sickness would never go and I had to lock myself in the bedroom while my DH cooked tea for himself and DD as I couldn't stand the smell. I ate nothing but crackers and marmite for 10 weeks as I couldn't stomach anything else!! But it does get better!! I'm now 34 weeks and feeling soooo much better. It slowly started to get better for me at about 18/19 weeks and by 20 weeks I was eating like a gannet!!

If you still feel ill the Dr can prescribe something to help ease the sickness and nausea. I had Cyclizine for a few weeks as I was loosing so much weight that they thought it might start to affect the baby.

It feels like such a long time when you are going though it, but believe me you will feel better and you'll soon forget how bad it was!

Good luck and I really hope you start to feel better soon!

Pinkjenny you're not a fraud, even if you don't have hg it's still miserable being / feeling sick all the time. Mine has lasted until 20 weeks first time, 16 weeks second, still get lots of nausea this time at 25 weeks (although at least not actually been sick since 16 weeks). Hopefully it will fade soon for you.

I had a friend who had severe HG in the last 3 months of pregnancy and it did go as soon as she'd delivered. She was on pretty strong tablets to help with the sickness before that.

Hang in there, it feels like it will never end, but it will

Thanks nappyaddict. Soda water, pineapple (am eating at the moment) and apple juice are helping. And peaches, but only if they are very hard.

Will try everything else on the list though.

I was like this with DD, didn't have HG but felt sick all the time. Couldn't even stand the smell of the DSs skin The only thing that helped for me was giving up dairy and meat and tea (nightmare!) but it did go once I'd had her (took a while to be able to stomach dairy though, and even now I have to be careful, and I still can't drink tea)

Icy cold apple juice was good for me. Either very, very cold drinks, or very hot tea seemed to stay down. It helped cos I was very thirsty all the time and was refreshing!

Serenity Did you have to give up eggs aswell or just butter, milk and cheese?

i was like this right the way through. after 14 weeks, you can start taking tablets. you still feel nauseus, but are less likely to be sick.
also, it magically disappeared the moment dd was born (by cs, but still my body knew)
my first words the morning after she was born - i don't feel sick!
also, there seems to be a link between sickness & depression - could be that you get depressed cos you feel sick, or could be that hormone levels cause both.

either way TALK to midwives/gps about it, and don't let them fob you off with 'it'll get better'.

the association between pregnancy & sickness was so strong for me, that it took 3 years before i could look at a pregnant woman without feeling sick!

I had this with both pregnancies. Both times it went away almost over night around 16-18 weeks. 2nd time it came back towards the end, but stopped as soon as I gave birth (maybe the pain from the shredded vagina helped me forget the nausea). I used to suck on frozen fruit like peaches and mango and grapes (you can do these yourself).

Best of luck, as I'm sure you know, since this isn't your first, it's all worth it in the end.

nappyaddict - I honestly can't remember about eggs, I don't eat a lot of them anyway, so I can imagine going through the whole pregnancy without trying. The milk and cheese just made me feel sick, and left a greasy film around my mouth, plus they just smelled off the whole time (I ended up taking a calcium supplement as I worked myself into a panic over osteoarthritis and brittle bones)

kissassangel - Oh yes. Lilac t-shirts, the smell of hot cars, ASDA and the smell of my hands after handling cheese or milk still makes me feel sick (and DD is 6 in November!) Manage to shop in ASDA, but standing in a certain spot in the carpark gives me flashbacks to throwing up in a carrier bag in the boot of the car... My mind hates me

Report
kickassangel · 24/07/2009 20:55

lilac t-shirts? were you surrounded by them during pregnancy?

Report
serenity · 25/07/2009 01:02

I was attacked by a flock of them...

(I had a favourite t-shirt, and wore it too many times whilst pregnant and wearing it afterwards triggered the same feeling of nausea)

Have you tried getting a prescription from your GP? Even if its just to give you a break from it for a short while.
I started throwing up lots and I know my stomach and how once that starts I just cant stop so I got a prescription (cyclizine)and have taken it for a few days to give everything a chance to settle down. I was getting dehydrated.

There seem to be different drugs for different things - nausea, vomiting, acid regulation etc and your GP is best to advise you. But this has been just the right thing for me and I am a bit annoyed that most websites for pregnancy sickness go on and on about different home remedies and dont even mention the different medications that could help (granted also the attendant risks) but getting yourself hospitalised or massively dehydrated cant be good either.
