Pregnancy

Think I may be about to miscarry - advice please

5+4 weeks pregnant - suddenly feel very hot and temperature has gone up to 37.4. I think I remember from last MC that it's one of the first signs of MC. Anyone got any advice? Had any experience of this? Know whether it's best to take paracetemol or whether there's just nothing you can do?

If its any consolation when I had my mc I was temp charting and I knew something was wrong as my temp dropped from 37.0 to 36.2 so it might not necessarily be a mc. I think its fine to take paracetemol. Fingers crossed for you that things are all ok.

thanks lucky - have taken paracetemol. Pretty convinced that it is a MC now

Oh you poor thing. Did you have a mc last pregnancy? And have you got any other symptoms?

itsalwaysthequietones · 25/06/2009 20:18

No, last pregnancy was successful - I have a lovely, little girl of 18MO but had a mc just before getting pregnant with her. Am just kicking myself for allowing myself to get excited about a pregnancy this early on when I know the percentage of MC is still so high.

but what other symptoms do you have to suggest this? Everything crossed for you!

Really? I didnt know that.
Ive had 4 mcs and i didnt have any hot flushes at all.
It is a hot day, could it not just be that?
Any other symptoms?

Any pregnancy after a mc is stressful, even if it wasn't straight away. I have everything crossed for you.

itsalwaysthequietones · 25/06/2009 20:34

thanks for your thoughts ladies. I haven't really had other MC symptoms but they I haven't had pregnancy symptoms either which I don't take to be a great sign.

sunburntats - really sorry about your MCs. My experience of the raised temp thing is as follows: last time I went to the EPU when I started to bleed heavily and before I was scanned to confirm the miscarriage they said I had a raised temperature, which they said was a common sign of MC. A friend miscarried about the same time and she described exactly what I experienced today, just a sudden, prolonged hot flush and raised temperature. A scan confirmed no HB but she didn't actually bleed for another few days.

I guess it's possible I'm fussing over nothing (I really, really hope so!) but I don't have any flu symptoms or anything and so it seems the most likely explanation - temp now 37.5, my usual is about 36.4

I was the same as luckywinner, and my temp dropped quite dramatically as I was miscarrying, and next time around (if there is a next time) I would take a higher temp as a positive sign.

Hope your okay, it's a horrible worry.

Thanks, slightlycrumpled and sorry to hear about your MC - I'm sure there will be a next time .

Anyway, will just have to try and switch off I guess. Thanks for all your comments.

I think that a raised temperature would only be significant if >38c, tbh.

At any rate, you can try to bring your temp down by resting & having plenty of fluids.

In the absence of other symptoms, it is not an indicator of miscarriage, AFAIK.

Take care & rest up.

Its so difficult to switch off. Especially when you have been there before. I think we are about the same amount of weeks pregnant. And if it makes you feel any better I am paranoid about mc again. I am finding it very stressful. And I am also worried about not many symptoms but I think thats because we are both quite early on. Will you have an early scan this time?

I've also never heard of this temperature thing (I had 4 MMCs).
Sorry to hear about your worries. Taking Paracetamol is fine (as you already knew) and whether this pregnancy will continue or not is at this stage really in the lap of the gods, isn't it? (Which I am sure you also know, sorry for stating the obvious)
Anybody who as ever experienced a MC will inevitavely worry with any subsequent pregnancy, so just accept you will be worried and let time pass. 'Tis the only thing for it.
Hope it all goes well for you. Good luck .

Thanks pacific - and so sorry to hear about yoru 4 MMCs. Feel stupid being so panicky after just one but as luckywinner says it's just hard to switch off. You're absolutley right though about not being able to control anything at this stage, just have to go with the flow.

Lucky - Yes, it is early days. I'm in the stupid position of actually hoping for MS, which I'm sure I'll regret at some point! And yes, was going to push for an early scan if poss at about 8 weeks (if I can wait that long!!) what about you?

Lou - thanks, have been applying the damp flannel!

I am desperate for morning sickness. All I want to do is be sick. I have a scan on 10th July as am not really sure how pregnant I am as had no af in between mc and this pregnancy. I am really struggling tbh. It may be true that it is in the lap of the gods but you want with all your heart for it to be ok.

I temp'd every day in early pregnancy as it's the only way of being sure you're still preggers - not heard of a higher than normal temp indicating the opposite before. Thinking of you OP - I really hope it's not bad news.

Report
itsalwaysthequietones · 25/06/2009 21:24

Thanks v much JetLi - so what were you checking for, temp dropping? Didn't realise it was a reliable way of checking you're still preg.

lucky - if it's any consolation I got preg straight after last MC (no af) and despite (a) being told it was probably ectopic (the doctor clearly didn't know what he was talking about) then (b) having an early scan that suggested the pregnancy wasn't developing properly and (c) experiencing heavy bleeding in early pregnancy - she was absolutely fine!! Best of luck with the scan, are you posting regularly on another thread so I can look out for how the scan goes?

Jet, do you think that is true for a missed miscarriage too? I temp every day still just for reassurance. But I wondered whether this would count if it was a missed mc.

itsalwaysthequietones do you temp?

Report
JetLi · 25/06/2009 21:59

Yep - I was checking to make sure my temp stayed high as this indicates pregnancy - a drop in temp would be an early indication of miscarriage as I understand it. Your basal temp goes up at ovulation, and will stay up if you get pregnant - then it should go a wee bit higher still at implantation. Then it should remain higher throughout pregnancy. (I was initially repeating pregnancy tests but then learned that this is no good because the hormones stay in your system even after a miscarriage).
For MMC I'm not sure and I loaned my book out. All miscarriages are awful, but the MMC is truly a wicked thing. I'm sorry Lucky - I'm not too sure on that point.
Keeping everything crossed for you both xx

Thanks Jet - that's really useful, I had no idea. Think perhaps the raised temp thing is if it goes much higher as lou said. Now feeling a bit sheepish for reacting quite so dramatically... Sorry ladies I'm obviously just a bag of nerves.

Lucky - no, I don't usually temp (as you can probably tell from my complete ignorance on the subject!!). Im tempted to start after being filled in by Jet but maybe it'll just be one more thing to worry about... Fingers crossed for your scan. Keep us posted.

I have had 3 mmcs and dont remember any flushes but I did not temp either.
I would also like to know if it is the same for mmc, as two of mine were. So if any one knows.
Hope you ok itsalwaysthequietones, its horrible when you are trying to interpret every symptom

I spoke to a doc on an NHS helpline last night and she said you can get the raised temp thing with a MC but it tends to happen after the bleeding/cramps etc i.e. right when you're in the thick of a MC so I'd obviously misunderstood. I don't know if it applies to MMC
