so many contradictions in what not to eat and what is safe. know ice cream has egg yolks in it but im not sure i can go all summer with no ice cream and the next god knows how many months either for that matter!! does anyone know if it is safe?? craving strawberry cheesecake hagen daazs really bad!!!

PerfectPrefect Sat 06-Jun-09 19:32:37

It is whippy icecream which has a risk of listeria which carries a arisk of harm to foetus.

Haagan daas is fine.

Not sure ice cream has egg yolks in does it?

Tee2072 Sat 06-Jun-09 19:32:55

Only soft serve ice cream is not allowed. Any commercial ice cream, like hagen daaz is pasteurized and fine.

moopymoo Sat 06-Jun-09 19:33:13

well Im not sure on current advice but on think I would have made it through either of my pregancies without ben and jerrys. Am sure its fine as it is pasturised.

nickytwotimes Sat 06-Jun-09 19:35:41

Mass produced stuff will be made with pastuerised, dehydrated eggs, if there are any in it at all. Most have vegetable oil, stabilisers, etc instead.

Mr Whippy should be avoided though as there is a tiny risk of food poisoning due to the machines. I have operated one and tbh, you wouldn't want one if you saw the mess of them. hmm

So, go ahead and enjoy your ice cream! You can definitely justiy the calories while you oare pg, so eat with joy.

funtimewincies Sat 06-Jun-09 19:36:10

You're having a giraffe! A whole summer without a Mr Whippy 99 - not possible!

I'll just pretend that I didn't read this thread and carry on in blind ignorance grin.

winjy Sat 06-Jun-09 19:38:29

thank you so much everyone!! the other half is gutted now coz he has to share the tub he thought he'd have all to himself!! gonna tuck in right away!!

perfectprefect it says on ingredients that it has egg yolks in - but it was news to me this week, i didnt realise ice cream has egg yolk in it until i read somewhere on the internet.

any other advice on what not to eat as this is my first... i know about blue cheese and pate which is not a prob for me and home made mayo too...but not sure on what else...any advice on anything would be mucho appreciated!!

crokky Sat 06-Jun-09 19:39:23

You're not supposed to eat ice cream from vans whilst pg (I think, listeria) but if you buy something like tescos ordinary vanilla icecream, that's fine. Get a cone, stick some tescos icecream in with a flake!

nickytwotimes Sat 06-Jun-09 19:40:08

Seriously, noone should eat Mr Whippy ice cream. The machines are very hard to clean well...envy (yuk)

Meglet Sat 06-Jun-09 19:40:27

just as long as its not from the ice cream man then it's fine.

i survived on morrissons chocolate brownie ice cream when i was pg with dd last summer.

bigTillyMint Sat 06-Jun-09 19:40:57

Don't worry funtimewincies (great name!) - that's what we all did 10 years ago grin

pavlovthecat Sat 06-Jun-09 19:42:13

How about Haagan Das from a Haagan Das stall by the seaside, where they scoop large quantities of blueberry and cream cheesecake ice cream into an italian chocolate coated cone?

Pleeeeease tell me these are ok? Seeing as they are not mister whippy? <desperately waits for a reply>

skidoodle Sat 06-Jun-09 19:43:57

Icecream vans come straight from heaven with their lovely cheap crunchy cones, angel-made raspberry ripple, and delicious flakes broken off from Jesus's own giant God flake.

There is no way they are bad for you and my unborn baby will get as much of this wonderful sustenance as I can possible fit into me this summer.

pavlovthecat Sat 06-Jun-09 19:44:22

Sorry, I got that wrong, its a Carte D'or stall, does that make a difference? hmm grin

winjy Sat 06-Jun-09 19:44:24

mmmm im in strawberry cheesecake haagen daazs heaven!!

psychomum5 Sat 06-Jun-09 19:45:18

tis only the whippy ice-cream you are not allowed, out of the machines, due to inability to clean properly (of at all, going on what it was like in the cafe I worked in as a teen during the summer season).

seriously, <<boak>>!

scoopy iceacream is fine

nickytwotimes Sat 06-Jun-09 19:46:15

Stall/van ice cream is fine afaik.

But for the love of God, never eat a Mr Whippy.
ANyone.

<shudders>

pavlovthecat Sat 06-Jun-09 19:47:12

<hugs psychomum, breathes sigh of relief> thank god indeed for that small mercy. Its one of the small number of sweet things that I need can eat in this pg!!!

funtimewincies Sat 06-Jun-09 19:47:39

grin bigTillyMint - can you tell that this is my second? Also liking your name a lot!

Winjy - some sensible advice here, especially at the bottom where it lists food that you think you might have to avoid but don't really.

I'm afraid that the only things that I avoid are pate (high vit A) and stuff like brie and blue cheese. I love a poached egg and I still eat prawns and other seafood if I'm cooking them myself at home, although not in restaurants I've not been to before (makes it sound like I have a social life grin). I also have a glass of wine or half a pint of real ale now and then and don't feel guilty. You find your own balance, one that you're comfy with.

pavlovthecat Sat 06-Jun-09 19:47:58

I can't bear the thought of a Mr Whippy, mainly as my brother used to refer to a certain consitency of dog turd as such [boak]

pavlovthecat Sat 06-Jun-09 19:50:00

Oh....DH just said that means I can't have any more McDonalds thickshakes - shock I hate mcdonalds, but they are the other only thing I have been able to keep down during a period of nothing else staying. They are designed for pg women and no-one else...shock

funtimewincies Sat 06-Jun-09 19:50:04

Maybe it's that I'm in the craving crap stage of pregnancy pavlov but it seems strangely attractive blush.

skidoodle Sat 06-Jun-09 19:50:18

Mr. Whippy's first name is Gabriel.

In fact, if you're being proper he is correctly addressed as Archangel Whippy.

He can play the tune from Match of the Day on his harp to let the children know that the manna icecream has arrived.

funtimewincies Sat 06-Jun-09 19:52:17

I thought that the tune meant that he'd run out of ice cream [innocent-looking emoticon].

<cruel mummy cackle>

winjy Sat 06-Jun-09 19:56:05

thanks funtimewincies for the fab advice

i dont think i'll ever fancy a mr whippy again!! but i have just polished off the tub off hagen daaz...and feel not an ounce of guilt...mmm mmm

how is everyone and their beans??
