last night in bed i laughed, not a big laugh just a giggle really and when i did i felt really sharp pain down either side of my belly. it was so bad i daren't move and dp had to help me turn over (was laying on my right side). it felt like i had pulled a muscle.......the pain subsided when i moved but this morning i have got up and my belly feels tender. and baby is moving (very active little so and so) and when it does the pain is in the same place but feels a bit like a stitch.

now i'm the sort of person who doesn't like to flap and keep saying to myself its just my muscles and ligaments stretching and if i rest for a couple of days it'll be ok............but i thought i'd just ask for some reassurance on here. should i worry about this now or should i leave it a couple of days before phoning my midwife?

It sounds as though it may be a muscle you have pulled and if baby is moving then all seems ok BUT I wouldn't hold off getting advice. To be on the safe side speak to your mw, god knows I have called them enough times over the last 38+ weeks .

Moschops - is this your first or second baby? I'm currently 24 weeks with no 2 and I've had these sort of pains on and off for ages - especially when I do a big yawn (quite often at the moment ). My midwife reassured me thats its ligaments stretching as you said and as I'm on no 2 its happened more frequently and earlier. If its your first baby it might just be because you are getting on a bit now and its all stretching etc!! Either way, isn't pregnancy fun??!! Good luck and try not to worry! SL x

It could have been a cramp/muscle spasm. If it was that would explain the tenderness.

When I got them I would feel bruised the next day.

I remember at just over 20 weeks, I too had a really sharp pain down my side. I mean, reaaaally painful. I called the emergency midwife and described my symptoms, it was kind of musclelike down my side. They asked if I had reduced movement or any other problems. I said no. They told me that it was pains from my uterus stretching, told me to take an asprin and have a bath. It worked nicely.

I'd mention though, just in case.
