I remember feeling the same way when I was pregnant. That and a longing for brie and other soft cheese. Wish they said I couldn't eat Mars Bars and perhaps I wouldn't have put on three stone with DD!!

Mummygow - can't you have one? I might be missing something but I ate prawns constantly when pg with both mine. Just get a whole load of prawns, make sure they are cooked well and slaver with 1000 island dressing. That's okay - isn't it???

They are fine to have in pregnancy - as Cod says, they don't harm the baby if you get ill. It really is just the listeria stuff you have to avoid (soft cheese, pate, cured meats etc), even smoked salmon is very low risk. Runny eggs are also okay iirc - salmonella will make you sick, but it won't affect the baby

FWIW, I've eaten everything you are not supposed to since 3 months - apart from cat poo, cigarettes and crack cocaine. I had prawns for my tea tonight and they were lovely. They are so healthy too so I had a really unhealthy chocolate pudding. Yum.

I eat peanuts misdee and I'm b/feeding. Also ate them during pregnancy (thought only to be avoided if existing allergies within family?)

you know when advice says soft cheese I could never find out which cheeses they were. Because a lot of brie is pasteurised now but some parmesan isn't. One website I found seemed to include all soft cheese, ie cottage, cream cheese, mozerella, ricotta and mascarpone. What about goats cheese? I had not found mumsnet then and I had a fridge full of cheese as I had been on the atkins diet. I wa so confused I just ate the cheddar and binned the rest!

Anything I have ever read say that you should not eat shellfish so just to be on the safe side I bought a jar of seafood sauce and dipped plain crisps in it and also made a salad and put the sauce over that - so sauce in fridge for when I get the urge

My eldest DD is 16 and there were no health warnings whilst pg.......I ate prawns, soft cheese, pate and everything everyone has mentioned with no harmful effects! A little of what you fancy does you good!

Actually I think the sauce is at the back of my fridge still!! It's going to take all my energy not to go straight in with a teaspoon!

I'm sure you're Ok with prawns, you know, if you buy them frozen and defrost carefully. I'd be wary of eating them at a restaurant or takeaway, but at home I'm sure you'll be fine. The same with cheeses, as long as they're supermarket bought and pasturised, you're OK. I asked the doc at beginning of pregnancy and that was his opinion. Actually he said avoid dodgy looking restaurants and home made cheese from back of beyond french farms ...

Misdee, you just took away my will to live!! Am off peanuts, as DH has terrible allergies (hayfever and animal allergies) - thought I only had to make it through 9 months of being pg, but now you tell me I can't have them while breastfeeding !! All I want is a big, fat peanut butter sandwich!! Have bought cashew nut butter, but it's just not the same . Even more annoying is the fact that I don't have any allergies...

So Franke you say that smoked salmon is ok? I have a longing for smoked salmon, cream cheese & a toasted bagel............ ohhh yummy....... I bought the cheese & salmon a couple of weeks ago and dh kept telling me "your not suppose to eat that" so the salmon went past it's sell by date but then on Sat. last while shopping I popped another packet of smoked salmon and it's peering out of the fridge at me each evening... to be honest the only think from keeping from eating it is that after dinner I do feel very nauseous & a little sick & I can't face the fish but I'm very tempted to bring it to work for lunch.................... might just treat myself tomorrow!!!

Duck pate....DUCK PATE whimpers I always crave things I can't have... I even ate some salami before remembering it was naughty no one gave me a list of the do not eats... well not a good list anyway so I get a bit confused sometimes! I must admit with my last pregnancy and during breastfeeding I constatnly ate peanut butter and I knew I shouldn't

The other thing I've really started fancying is alcohol - and before I got pg I wasn't a big drinker at all. Had some friends over on Saturday night, and all I wanted was a pre-dinner G&T and a couple of nice big, cold glasses of sauvignon blanc with dinner. Had to satisfy myself with 1 small glass of sav blanc, but it wasn't enough! Was also fancying wine on Monday night - no idea where this has come from!
