Im expecting ds no 2 on 24 May. I wanted baby to give ds1 (will be 2 and 10 mths) a prezzy but wasnt sure what to get, how much to spend, whether to make a big deal of it? Have any no 2 mums been thinking about this or do you have any ideas - eg what friends might have done? Im getting worried because my shopping ability is slowly declining - I just feel like hibernating for the next 4 weeks , under my duvet (sadly not possbile with ds1!!)

Hi tab. Join us in the ante-natal clubs "due may05" I think we've talked about this. My ds was 3 last week and he really wanted Dora stuff but I held off because I am due early May and wanted the baby to be bringing him the BEST present! I think the more exciting the pressie the better but then I am a sucker for seeing ds's face light up

When I was in hospital a mum bought the older boy a doctors set - I thought that was quite a good idea.

my SIL bought Tigger and EEyore toys (they are big!), so on the day i came home from hossy, DP's DD gave Eeyore to my baba and baba gave Tigger to DP's DD - just a way of saying "hello"....

I'm due early June so thinking about this too. We'll probably go for a baby doll - but one that dd can bath - all her others have soft bodies. I'm thinking of setting up a small parallel nursery in a corner of her bedroom so she can do stuff as I do.

as SS was 5 he got to choose his own prezzie from the baby, he went to Toys r Us on the way to the hospital with his dad and got himself something fab, which he'd been hankering after, then he also choose dd and I something! Best of all when he got to the hospital, he got to hold his little sister, whom he was mesmerised by and then got a free dinner out of the nice ladies on the ward! as they knew the canteen was closed to those not admitted as it were, and didn't want him to go hungry! (I had a sandwich instead, as I know our taxes buy these friviloties and didn't want to push our luck!)
Have to say though, he was also very pleased to show his little sister his new purchase! and was fully aware she'd brought it for him!

I'm due on Tuesday and ds is 2 1/4. We have bought him a doctor's set and I made him a doctor's coat. He is really into imaginative play, and we know he will love it. It is wrapped in fimble paper and in my hospital bag. We have planned it that when dp first brings ds into the hospital, the baby and pressie will both be in the cot together.

Lunavix, it took me ages to convince ds that there was a baby in my tummy and NOT a puppy I think he thought the end result was optional.

I got my first her own baby in a car seat when we had no.2, and she was in her ellement(sp?). She still has that doll, and she is now 11.

When we had each of the others I bought colouring stuff (each thing wrapped up so they looked like they had lots of little bits) so that when they came to visit me they had something to do.

Definitely NOT a puppy! Wouldn't that be like having twins?

My next is due on dd's third birthday - I was thinking of making out that the baby was one of her birthday presents?! Is that a good or bad idea?

A puppy?!!!

Are you mad?

Isn't a baby brother/sister the most brilliant present a child can get?

My dd was 2 and 10 mths when ds was born and was really involved from the start, which she loved, and she's always loved him dearly, and him her (although they still fight like cat and dog!). I didn't get her a pressie fromm the baby, I think she'd have though 'Where the hell has the baby got that from? He's been in your tummy, not at Debenhams!'

Best pressie from Mummy and Daddy and new baby - plenty of kisses, cuddles, and stories

dd 'bought' ds a remote controlled car when she arrived. He LOVED it.

Morning paper,

I love it! That's a brilliant idea! Think of the money you'll save

Should I wrap it?

Report
jjash · 22/04/2005 11:52

No Morningpaper - dont wrap it .You know what toddlers are like for playing with the paper and discarding the toy!!

Fennel · 22/04/2005 11:53

a puppy is totally mad! the last thing you'll feel like doing is looking after a puppy at that time.

remember loads of people will give the toddler a present, and the toddler can also play with all the baby's new toys as the baby won't be up to much playing. so IME the toddler does quite well out of it even if you don't get them anything

but a doll + nappy etc can be fun so they can play at babies.

we have bought dd ( 3.5) a bike from toysrus for when the new one arrives ( due 2 weeks). We were originally going to get her one for Christmas but delayed it so we could make it a special pressie from the babe to her!

Thanks for all your responses. I cant believe that I got so many replies so quickly!!. I like the idea of the doctor's set. I love your toddler's reaction to the pressie jjash!! - that's brilliant. I was thinking that it has to be a toy that they can play with themselves a little without too much adult intervention. Im not sure how he'd react to a doll. He has a mini pushchair and he's always pushed around a toy dog!! Dont think Id cope with a real one though! I looked for a boy doll once (not very hard) but couldnt find one. I wish things werent quite so pink and blue defined - if that makes sense.

MorningPaper, my brother was born just before my 6th birthday. I was told that that he was my birthday present. I got very possesive over him and was reluctant to let anybody else hold him or do anything for him (which my Mum quite appreciated)! Many years later, we are still the very best of friends. If I ever need to talk to anyone, he's the person I think of 1st (after dh).

My 2nd is due when DD will be 2 years 10 months. The baby is planning on getting her some clothes for her naked Barbie doll. DD has been rather concerned about her lack of clothes (got her 2nd hand) for quite some time.
