Underwired bras- what's the big deal???

I have worn pretty, underwired bras throughout both my previous pregnancies. I breastfed both boys for 10 months.
I have just got back from the shops and picked out a new bra at a large department store, which looked great. Got to the till and the lady said. "OOOh, are you pregnant". Yes, I am 26 weeks. "Well, I'm sorry madam, I am not allowed to sell that bra to you". My response was, "Please don't be so daft, and take my money". She was not happy and grudgingly sold me the bra (without calling the bra or boob police, thank goodness).

Admitedly my boobs are increasing at a rate of knots (38C-38F already) and I am spending rather a lot on bras. But I NEED to feel good and HATE the thought of my boobs sitting slackly either side of my bump (which they did when I did as I was told and bought an non-underwired bra in my first pregnancy). I also have a dh who I would like to look reasonably 'pert' for (my choice, not his BTW)

Can someone tell me what the big deal is?

Can't see what the big deal is either ~ never heard of that before and to refuse you to buy it is taking it to the extreme!

Think it's something to do with possible affecting the milk ducts, but this obviously hasn't affected you before. I didn't take any notice of it when expecting ds or now (currently 33 +3) and am proudly wearing an underwired bra today...must say am very of your growth tho...was a 36b before and only just about one cup size bigger now!!!

the advice is to wear non wired bras because they can press on the milk ducts, and maybe cause mastitis

but its obviously your choice! the shop woman is obviously an total expert on pregnancy (not)

i had a similar experience when about twelve weeks PG and getting measured up for bras in M & S - assistant was horrified at me wanting to try on underwired ones!

When i first started at m&s i was a bra advisor & nailpolish is correct. We were always advised not to sell them but to promote the sports bra instead. Having said that i wore underwired bras all throughout my 2nd pregnancy , though i did make sure they were well fitted. If you are concerned just make sure the wire sits on the outside of your breast & doesn't touch it.

Some people just take their jobs too seriously!

Yes - this particular lady was the bra fitter, so obviously was a real expert. I fully accept that they are there to give advice, but as for telling me I am not ALLOWED to do something... well it's completely ridiculous!!

I would not have stopped anyone from buying one that is taking it too far!! I would have advised them to get regularly measured though.

Wow i am shocked. i am now 38 + 4 and i have never heard that we should not wear underwires when pregnant!!! really shocked by this!!!. I have of course then broken that rule and havnt even needed to get a bigger size much to my regret, only an extender on the back where my ribs have pushed outwards. Not planning on breast feeding so hopefully shouldnt have any worries or problems. Off to the midwifes later, i will ask about this!!! Next they will be saying i shouldnt be wearing a thong!!! lol

I don't know what the answer to this thread is, but if you don't want droopy boobs, have you considered buying a "shock absorber" sports bra? I always use one for the gym and I bought a bigger one for pregnancy. They are not cheap but they are so comfy and supportive.

Both times I've been pg the very first sign I had (before late period even) was agonising pain from my underwired bras. Stopped as soon as I put on the sports ones in the same size. I don't understand it and I really really miss my lovely bras (had just forked out for Rigby and Peller before this pg and I just know that I will come out a different size...). So for me it's nine months of dowdy-bra droopy-boobedness and then straight into the glamour of feeding bras... Bravissimo catalogue arrived today and I nearly cried with longing!

if you've ever had mastitis (3 times in 10 weeks with dd1) then I don't think you'd take the risk of blocking a milk duct...

My midwife said that one lady packed 7 thongs in her hospital bag. Goodness only knows what she did with the maternity pad after giving birth.

lol, u lot r making me giggle!!! Love the thong thing! Had a simliar experience in Debenhams with being told not to wear underwired bras, got implants and with preg swelling they are really bloody heavy now but just sticking to marksy's full support non wired anyway for now as they are pretty compfy and I like my nipples to show!!!
