accuracy of telling sex at 12 week scan??

had my 12 week scan yesterday - am about 12 1/2 weeks now, said we wanted to know sex at next scan and sonographer said it looked like a girl - what is the likelehood of this being correct?? not running out to be lots of pink (not really a pink person anyway) but just wondering as was so convinced it was a boy and heartbeat really sounded like a boy's (like I remember my ds's being rather)

Has anyone else been told the sex at 12 weeks and it been right (or wrong)

It's a bit hit and miss and depends on the equipment used, the position of the baby and the skill of the sonographer at spotting these things. At 12 weeks it's sometimes possible to see but things in that area afaik are only just beginning to develop.

Hearbeat thing's a myth too. My baby had a "boy's" heartbeat and rate all the way through. She doesn't look much like a boy.

Hi BB123,

I am really surprised they told you that early. I had my first NHS scan at 14.5 weeks and she wouldn't even give us a guess. Said we would have to wait until 20 weeks as it was too early to tell.

i was surprised too - she asked me what I had already and when I said a ds and a dd she told me - she did have a good view of between the legs - was actually a very clear scan and baby measuring quite big!

I'd say she has about a 50/50 chance of being right

I had private nuchal scans at the Fetal Medicine Centre at 12 weeks - they got the sex right both times, although they say that it is only about 85% accurate at this stage. It depends on the sophisitication of the equipment, the training that the sonographer has had, and whether they can get a good look between the legs!

thanks, 85% quite high - have to wait a whole 8 weeks to find out if she was right!

Same as hatrick - my doctor told me mine was a boy at 12w exactly and he certainly is. There's a good website (baby2see.com I think?) that explains the genital tubercle. Also you can post a pic of your scan on the chat boards on in-gender.com (I think) and some knowledgeable sonographer there will analyse the "nub shot" for you!

Fetal Medicine Centre told me I was 75% likely to be having a boy, at 12 weeks - they were right.

I also had a private nuchal scan at 12 weeks and they said it was 85% a girl. They look for the pelvis and whether it is tilted or not. That she was a girl was confirmed at 20 week scan and again with more scans and when she was born!

At 12 weeks they said I have having twin girls at a private nuchal scan. They were 95% sure. It is confirmed now. I would say it was easier for them since the girls are identical.

I had an NHS scan at 12 weeks and we asked if she could tell us the sex. She said way to early to confirm, but after the scan she said she had had a very good look at the "bits" and could say that in her professional opinion it was a girl. We had this re-confirmed at our 20 week scan, and again at a private scan at 26 weeks.

I am 2 weeks away from finding out and sincerely hope they were all right, otherwise my "son" will be dressed in girlie clothes for a long time

The sonographer at the 12 week scan said that unless they were almost 100% sure, they never say due to the4 likelihood of being sued. at 12 weeks she said 85% due to the angle of the dangle!

so maybe a better chance of her being right than I first thought!! was so convinced this one was a boy but will have to wait and see now - 7 weeks to go until next scan
