Can anyone recommend a soft drink that isn't revoltingly sweet?

Can anyone recommend something non-alcoholic that isn't disgustingly sugary/sweet-tasting? Ideally, it'd be something that guests might assume was wine...;)

I've tried lots of Ame/Schloer type things but they get so sickly after even one glass that I just have to revert to water (obviously not a bad thing, but as I'm well known as a bit of a wine lover, my friends are going to twig straight away that I'm PG!)

Apple juice mixed with water is the traditional foil for white wine.

Fizzy water with fresh lime juice. Delicious, refreshing, and has the helpful side effect of clearing up any lingering mouth ulcers you might have

Oooh, both of those sound v tempting. I'll give them a try - thanks!

Actually, that's just reminded me that last time I used to drink blueberry juice with fizzy water - it looked remarkably like a nice Cabernet!

Big Tom tomato juice - basically virgin mary - very spicy and not sweet.

Non-alcoholic Becks lager is very nice and not sweet. Or you could mix fruit juice with enough water to get the taste right - if it was say white grape juice, it would look like wine.

grapefruit and orange big favourite with me
also like the tang of tonic

Bottlegreen's Aromatic lime cordial would look like wine, and it's really not sweet provided that you dilute it enough.

Another vote for non-alcoholic Becks, it really does taste remarkably close to the real stuff.

I am ttc, but I'm normally a complete wino, o am dreading the first few months of abstinence whilst not being able to spill the beans! My friends will guess :0. Good luck

bundle has reminded me, grapefruit juice and tonic is a nice 'sour' refreshing pub drink.

Waitrose do a lovely hibiscus drink - close your eyes and it tastes not unlike a light jammy beaujolais. Pomegranate juice is lovely too - also any of Fentiman's offerings particularly Orange Jigger. HTH

Elderflower cordial is also very nice and not too sweet.

Lime and soda is great- you can have it as strong or as weak as you like.... and if anyone asks tell them it's vodka, lime and soda

I second sparkling water with a big chunk of lime (squeeze a bit in and then drop the chunk into hte glass) - add a dash of cranberry juice if you want to make it very slightly sweeter.

Hiya can I just butt in here and ask a question. Cyteen - you recommended grapefruit juice. I drank grapefruit juice to 'get the juices flowing' (ahem) when I was ttc and magically it worked! Now I have 3 cartons in the fidge - it is safe to drink it in pregnancy is it? Just checking (paranoid)

Errrr, soz to throw a spanner in the works- i thought tonic was a no no in pg because of the quinine in it (which is the same thing in malaria drugs)?

I drank a lot of iceberg non alcoholic wine..

its not sweet at all.. comes in a wine bottle and you can drink from a wine glass like everyone else... few of my pregnant friends have found it a real life saver at dinner parties etc

last new year we had friends over for dinner and one was driving.. we got her Tesco non alcoholic bucks fizz.

She made me get the bottle out to prove that she wasnt drinking and driving because it tasted like the real thing

I asked my midwife about tonic and she said that in moderation it's fine and you'd have to be downing litres of the stuff to put your baby at any risk. Still, prob best avoided and there are loads of other options that taste nicer anyway!

Oh thank you all - loads of ideas to try here!

Last time I tried non-alcoholic wine it was utterly revolting so I'll look for the ones you mention and maybe try the Becks too (I wonder if I could con DH into drinking that too?)

slackrunner - good luck TTC!

50/50 fizzy water and OJ.

I like gin and bitter lemon, so became a bitter lemon girl in the first couple of months and told my friends it was my usual.

On tonic, I mentioned to my MW that I was getting leg cramps in the night and she suggested I drink tonic as the quinine is good for cramps. But guess the moderation rule applies here

Ali, if you can get hold of non-alcoholic Erdinger I can highly recommend it - tastes just like the real thing, a delicious creamy wheat beer. Sainsbury boozeless German lager is good too.

HairyToe, no idea about the grapefruit juice but I'd imagine it's fine
