Anyone an expert in HCG levels in early pregnancy? I'm going a bit crazy here...

Hi I am 5wks 3 days.

Had HCG level of 310 at 4 wks 4 days last Monday.

Had bad stomach pains (turned out to be tummy bug) but was worried so had another blood test of 675 at 5wks 1 day on Friday.

That's 310 to 675 in 4 days. It's supposed to double every 2 days. First result is from hospital, 2nd result through GP so GP didn't have both results to compare.

I've been googling too much and have convinced myself I'm having an eptopic or missed MC. Got another blood test tomorrow and I'm so scared. Am not sleeping.

Have you got any encouragement?

Hi, please try not to worry to much, I also spent hours searching the net regarding hcg levels and comparing myself. I was told that it's often the case that it can take upto 72 hours for numbers to double.

Also my doctor and the consultant at the epu told me that they don't take too much notice of the exact doubling of hcg levels and that what is important is that they are increasing by noticable amounts if you see what i mean HTH

But that's doubling in 4 days! Thanks for your help though, will try not to worry.

The doubling of HCG over two days is just an average, sometimes it's faster, sometimes slower.

It could just be slower in your case. Try not to be too scared, it could all still be fine, but it is good you are having another blood test to find out what's happening.

Good luck.

Sorry if that didn't make much sense GordenTheGopher, what I meant was my GP told me about the 72 hour thing, but the consultant at the epu told me it doesn't matter if it's not doubling it just needs to increase, so it was two different opinons if that makes sense.

But I felt that the consultant at the epu would have more experience of what she was talking about.

And like belgo says everybody's pregnancy is different and some people can be slower to increase.

Sorry if I'm not being much help, but I was completely obsessed over the same thing only a couple of weeks ago so I do know what your going through.

Scans are far more accurate a picture of how a PG is doing than HCG levels. When I was a bit further along in pregnancy than you, my HCG levels went from 4500 to 5900 in 48 hours, so nowhere near doubling. PG was still fine though. The web is full of doom and gloom about this issue - but I read that in 85% of healthy PGs HCG levels double - which will mean that there will be a significant minority (15%) of health PGS where they don't double. Best wishes and obviously if you get more bad pain, get back to hospital straightaway.

Actually, GTG, it is 85.44 hours, so you are only 13 hours behind the 72 hours they talk of.

Try not to worry - most ladies have no idea what their betahCG is at any stage of pregnancy

Don't think I need to worry about HCG levels any more as I've just had a bit of bleeding so I think it's all over now anyway.

I am sorry Gordon if you are miscarrying. However, bleeding is common in pregnancy and could it be that its an implantation bleed?

There is nothing you can do for the moment, contact your GP tomorrow and until then try to rest.

Gordon - a bit of bleeding, a miscarriage does not make, to paraphrase a saying about swallows and summers.

Take care of yourself over the next couple of days, see what your hCG is, and if the bleeding worsends, before you sign yourself off.

I had my HCG levels done at 7 weeks as I had a lot of pain in one side. They went from 1600ish to 2100ish in 2 days so I asked for a scan as I thought they were supposed to double - Thats what my GP told me anyway. Had the scan and it was fine. Dd is now 3 months old.

If you are still unsure go back to your GP and ask for an early scan which is probably the only thing that will put your mind at rest. I hope all is ok for you x
