I know im probably being over dramatic, but Ive just found out Im pg but I did a test last week (too early as have no patience) which was negative. I then kept having mild cramps as if I was about to have my period. Well, to cut a long story short, I went out with friends on Saturday night and drank too much wine as I was sure that I wasnt pg. Next thing is that 5 days later I still havent had my period so did 3 tests which are all + . My dh & I are over the moon but I feel really guilty that I might have affected the baby already... help!

Most women don't know they're pregnant for the first six weeks or so, and drink.

Don't let the pregnancy police stress you out - enjoy your pregnancy.

I found out that I was pregnant with each of mine after a weekend on the booze. They are all fine. Don't worry honey. As to the DTs, well we were on holiday when they were conceived and all I can say is champagne sangria.

No harm done whatsoever. Think (think) that the baby doesn't impant and have working placenta (i.e. transference) for a while anyway. But in any case, not a problem. I was still smoking and drinking quite freely until I found out I was pregnant with dd.

Hi j2005 - I'm not a medical person - but I wouldn't worry too much. Just think of all the women who don't realise they are pregnant for months and carry on as normal eating and drinking all the things we're told not to! I found out I was pregnant with DS1 after a particularly heavy St Patricks weekend in Dublin downing Guiness like it was going out of fashion and he is absolutely fine!!!

an old friend of mine fell pg (planned but not expecting to fall 'then') while on a 1 weeker booze holiday in Ibiza - no effect on the baby...........although he was the biggest of our 'group' that were expectingthe same time - he was 10lb 11oz

Babies are very resilient creatures.

I have a friend who had a condom split on her, she took the morning after pill, and made sure she did so at exactly the right times etc. she kept them down and she then had key hole surgery 3 days later and 9 months later had the most beautiful DD

I had a massive hangover on the day I found out I was pg. Was just randomly looking at the calendar and realised I was a week(ish) late and said half jokingingly to dp 'Hey maybe Im pg ' Dd is a fine healthy 13mnths now. so I wouldnt worry if I were you.

I went to my GP in a panic about the same thing - a whole bottle of red - and she said 'for goodness sake, how do you think most pregnancies occur in the first place?' and then explained that the embryo feeds from it's own yolk sac to begin with, rather than from the placenta, so isn't enjoying it's mother's red-wine intake.

LOL! Pleased to hear the bit about the baby feeding from the yolk sac etc, I didn't know that.

When I was pg with DS2 I was in Greece and had Sex on the Beach every night (the cocktail, it was v cheap in the local bar! ), and red wine with my dinner. It wasn't until halfway through the second week of the holiday it dawned on me that my period had been due the day we flew out (isn't that always the case) and hadn't arrived yet.

When I got home the test was positive and after initial concerns that I may have pickled DS2 he is a healthy and bright 2.5 year old.

Sorry forgot to add .. I spent a hungover Sunday lunchtime in the pub with friends nursing a pint of lager and 2 benson & hedges cigarettes .. then found out I was pregnant 3 hours later

j2005,after ttc for 3.5 years,drinking hardly any alcohol,I finally concieved whilst on hols & drinking like it was going out of fashion.

The next time I got pregnant,I was taking anti depressants & this time I was taking prescription drugs for vertigo.

Same as everyone else who's posted. Took Dh on wonderful trip to Venice as asurprise for his birthday. Ate raw cheese/loads of seafood, drank loads...then wondered why I was quite so exhausted after we came home. Found out a week later.

She's 4 now and no worries about her at all.

HOWEVER, you're probably right to not drink any more during the whole pg. I drank a few glasses of wine a week through both pgs but new medical stuff suggests you shouldn't. If I was doing it again I personally would be abstinent. Realise that this is controversial, particularly as it's an international audience.

Like nappybaglady I drank a few glasses of wine a week with DS1 after the initial 12 weeks as a book I have said "most women who drink no more than 10 units per week have perfectly healthy babies". It was my first pregnancy and friends also assured me it did no harm. I had no more than one glass per night with my dinner.

DS1 has developmental delay stemming most likely from epilepsy he developed, brought on by infection at around 3 months old. I am sure he was fine when he was born - all his agpar scores were 10/10 and his develoment was fine to start. I hope I am not frightening anyone - the doctors have assured me that it is not the alcohol that is responsible, and that it couldn't have brought on the epilepsy, but I was hoping for some reassurance from you all - I am racked with guilt and have been ever since DS1 was diagnosed.

Incidentally DS1 is doing really well now, he has grown out of the epilepsy and is catching up in his development, and he is a bright little spark. I feel sure he is going to be fine. But the fact that I drank still haunts me. Did anyone else drink during their pregnancy?

Pages- if you hadnt drunk alcohol whilst pregnant you'd have found another reason to blame yourself for this. Guilt is part of being a parent and I'm sure most parents whose children ave problems have searched themselves to see if they did something wrong.
The doctors have told you alcohol couldnt have caused it - I'm sure they would tell you if they thought it had. The fact is you didnt cause this.
