Bleeding at 12 weeks - worried

dinny · 26/08/2008 15:33

Just had some medium bleeding, am 12 weeks pg today - phoned EPU at hospital and they said to see if it settles overnight and to call them in morning. Is this right?

Am sure at the hospital where I had my previous 2 children they said to come in for scan straightaway (though I never had bleeding with either pg before so am not 100% sure)

really really worried - can it ever be something other than a mc?

ps have nuchal scan booked in this Thursday anyway

yes, it can be other things. I had bleeding with ds1 on and off, and one bleed with ds2. they couldn't find any reason for it, and it stopped.

I also have a friend who had a HUGE bleed. ie, gushing (sorry if TMI) and had to use a bath towel to stop the flow of blood. part of her placenta had become detached, hence the huge amount of blood loss, but it joined back again and baby was born at term, perfectly healthy.

I won't tell you not to worry, because of course you will anyway, but don't think that it can only be m/c. I think there are a lot of reasons for bleeds.

is is constant, or on and off? and is it bright red or brownish>?

I had an early bleed (bright red blood) at about 5 weeks which settled down quickly (didn't last overnight) and things seem to be progressing ok so far (approaching 11 weeks)

was speaking to my friend about it the other day and she said she'd had quite a bit of bleeding on and off throughout her pregnancy and everything was still OK

I know it's worrying-I'd be worried too
but it could be fine and may not last long
but as they say give them a ring if you're still bleeding tomorrow

fingers crossed for you! hope everything's ok

Its impossible to know without a scan - some people have loads of bleeding and a totally healthy pregnancy, some have none and mc. Most EPAU won't scan you same day, and in fact its unusual that they spoke directly to you (you are obv with a good one), as bleeding is fairly common.

If you still have bleeding tomorrow, def call them and get a scan with them as if it is a mc, much much better to have that news in EPAU than in the antenatal ultrasound dept.

Hope it turns out for the best

I had quite heavy bleeding at 12 weeks and because it was on a Saturday, they wouldn't scan me until the Monday. All turned out well though and I just bled on and off for most of the second trimester. If there's no pain, its a good sign ?

I know it is very worrying but it doesn't have to mean a mc. Bleeding in pregnancy is quite common but no-one really discusses it.

I have had bleeding with both of my pregnancies some of which was quite heavy. I have a lovely little boy and I'm currently 32 weeks with my second so it doesn't have to be a mc.

This time I had spotting every day for the first 5 months and heavier bleeding when my pregnancy would have been due. You might also get some mild cramping over the next few days as the blood may irritate your womb again, it doesn't have to mean a mc.

Put your feet up, stay hydrated and try not to worry too much.

It was a bright red small to medium bleed, I suppose, enough to cover that middle bit of your knickers, was when I was out food shopping, came home and went to the loo and oh, it was such a horrid shock to see blood

it was exactly like when I come on with period, actually

but haven't had any cramping (touch wood)

will definitely call tomorrow if doesn't stop - otherwise I suppose I wait for nuchal scan on Thursday? (if no more bleeding)

Sorry, meant period not pregnancy.

You might continue to spot with old brown blood for a day or two

yeah def give them a call if you have any more. otherwise I think thurs would be fine for scan.,
although, if you call them ask them whether they'd advise an internal scan. your nuchal one will just be a regular scan

just manage to speak to my lovely community mw as she is at our GP surgery today - she said same as EPU, see how tonight is, isn't necessarily bad news but if have any more bleeding to phone EPU tomorrow and they will scan

I do seem to have vague memory of being told I had a cervical erosion after ds was born, mw said they can often bleed in pg....

also, my period would have been due about now. oh, I hope all is OK, feel really guilty as I went boogie boarding over the weekend

I had a huge bleed at 15 weeks on a Saturday (right in the middle of a wedding - had to rush out) and was carted off in an ambulance. I was convinced I'd lost the baby but I was scanned on Monday and was fine. They never found out what the bleeding was either. I have since found out this happens to quite a lot of women who go on to term absolutely fine but no one really talks about it.

Try and stay calm (easy to say, harder to do, I know) and wait for the scan. Hope everything is fine.

Oh dinny, I know the feeling. I (and lots of others too) had bleeding from 11 weeks until 17 weeks - like a regular period. It was bright red for the first couple of weeks and then brown. It was really unnerving. It all turned out okay though. Try to relax and rest tonight and fingers crossed for you tomorrow. xx

oh, dinny to hear this. I would definately call in the morning and ask for a scan. Even if the bleeding settles down again you will worry yourself sick until next Tuesday.

Like others have said, it could be nothing, it could be something but one thing is for sure, it's more common than we are led to believe.

Get checked out tomorrow and in the meantime take it as easy as you possibly can.

Hi hope everything goes ok for you! With my last pregnancy i bled on and off all the way through and the first time it was so upsetting i was about 10 weeks and i went to the doctors and she said i had an erosion of some sort that was being agravated and the bleeding continued through out my pregnancy.
I know how you must be feeling!

oh, dinny

honestly lovely, try not to worry too much about it. One of the women on the pregnancy after MC thread has been bleeding and was convinced she was miscarrying again. She had a scan today and all was well; good heartbeat and everything at 8ish weeks.

Try to get some rest tonight and get seen in the morning; nuchal scan booked for Thursday or not.

Big positive vibes coming your way.

oh dinny, I honestly don't think it is inevitable at all. There are threads all the time about this on here and more often than not they turn out to be ok, honestly.

there are a lot of reasons why bleeding happens, try and focus on that!

good point thisis.

My SIL bled until about 20 weeks with her twins and they couldn't find a reason for it. It was finally discovered after her last bleed that she had a clot/haematoma between the placenta and the wall of her uterus which had been coming away in stages. After 20 weeks, no more bleeding and the babies were fine.

Try and stay positive
