Pregnancy

Pregnant and ill - but trying to eat healthily

I'm 13 weeks pregnant, so should be over morning sickness, but I've had a very bad cold for 2 weeks, and a mild stomach upset - feel absolutely exhausted. Despite not feeling like eating anything (partly as I want to get rid of the tummy bug), I know I need to keep a reasonable diet for the sake of the baby.

I drank water for 24 hours this week, and ate plain toast for the next 24 (docs advice) - no dairy for 4 days (I'm a veggie) but tummy still feels queasy and I really can't be bothered to eat anything.

What things are "essentials" to eat (for the sake of the baby) would you say?

Sorry for this bizarre, pathetic post!

I remember being told milk and bananas were pretty good things to eat. The reason I remember is because I don't like milk or bananas. So I would throw a banana in the blender, along with some skimmed milk, and then some cocoa powder so the whole thing tasted of chocolate instead of milk or banana. If you don't feel well liquid food is a lot easier to manage.

Don't worry too much. I had horrid morning sickness and found that the one thing I could and wanted to eat was Mccoys salt and vinegar crisps! I ate tons of them!!

When you are feeling better and more able to face food then make sure you eat plenty of fresh fruit/veg, drink water and enjoy your pregnancy!

I generally have a pretty healthy diet so didn't worry too much while I was pregnant - I just made sure I took my preg vitamins.

I've been quite ill with a chest infection the last two weeks (am 20 weeks) and haven't been eating that well but I have been taking a multi vitamin tablet.
Sounds like milk's not an option for you. I'm a vegan and have been guzzling fortified oat milk drink. It tastes nicer than soya and less trouble for your poor tummy too.
Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, I love dairy products, but doc said they were no good for tummy upsets (which I've had for 3 weeks now). Normally I have a really healthy diet. The idea of banana, milk and choc powder is heaven. Vitamins - a good idea (my brain is gone to mush - let alone the babys).

I have been taking Floradix religously and think it makes a difference.

I'm a veggie too, but have really high iron levels which I think is to do with the floradix.

Also, no good for you know but someone suggested to me in my last pg to take a prebiotic drink as I was nauseous the whole time. I didn't expect it to work but I think it actually did!

I'm taking the Tommys folic acids ones which (now I look) have omega3 and most of the other vitamins (except enough B6 and zinc - hmm, what do they do?!). So am feeling a bit less guilty now. Thanks!
