Why are maternity clothes in H&M so titchy?

Or am I more of a whale than I thought?

Got some maternity trousers from Topshop - size 12 - comfy fit

H&M - size 14 - on the tight side. Ditto tops in a medium. I mean they fit, but I'm only 5 months so I need room to grow grin

(sighs and prepared to trek to Regents St AGAIN for girnomous clothes)

I've just bought a maternity cardigan from H&M - black with a hood and zip - and I had to buy 'large' and it's still only just goes around my 33 week bump. I'm usually a very average medium in all clothes.

I'm still pleased with it though.

In comparison, children's clothes are huge for the size.

so if you're a whale, then so am Ismile

FrannyandZooey Wed 20-Aug-08 19:44:46

oh I found them small also - the large size didn't fit me after about 6 months
I thought it was just because I was quite porky, though blush

FrannyandZooey Wed 20-Aug-08 19:46:11

I have got some brand new tops in large if anyone does fit them and would like to buy them! I live too far away from an H+M to have returned them so they are sitting in my wardrobe. Open to offers

EffiePerine Wed 20-Aug-08 19:46:45

they have some lovely stuff though (and CHEAP). Lots of purple and other colours (fed up of shades of beige)

EffiePerine Wed 20-Aug-08 19:47:53

ooh which ones? Might be interested

I shouild have remembered that I had to buy the large size when pg with DS (am am sure I am a bit bigger this time)

twinklytoes Wed 20-Aug-08 19:50:19

H&M has been my life-saver this pg. Haven't found any probs with sizing, even got trousers long enough for my 35in pins. I've bought the next size up to my normal because their sizing is actually out when you compare the euro measurements with the same in other shops.

FrannyandZooey Wed 20-Aug-08 19:53:23

(sorry for hijack blush)
Effie they are from the spring - a black short sleeved very light weight blouse thing (blouse material, not actually with buttons on)
and 2 long sleeved tunic tops - one dark brown and one black - with a silvery / gold thread running through them so subtle sheen effect

can do photos

EffiePerine Wed 20-Aug-08 19:55:14

photos would be good . Let me know what you think you want for them as well.

I have some size 14 wideleg linen trousers that are still immense at 36 weeks! I am normally a 14 yes, but they are huge!

nappyaddict Wed 20-Aug-08 21:06:07

don't know about maternity clothes but their normal clothes are titchy. a size 14 skirt is very tight am a 10/12 everywhere else.

lydiathetattooedlady Wed 20-Aug-08 22:48:02

i used to work there and as a member of staff i found you would need to go to the next size or sometimes even two sizes! so yes they are titchy!

missmama Wed 20-Aug-08 23:14:57

I wanted the purple mat jeans and t-shirt.
I was gutted that they didn't even touch the sides, I buy clothes there usually and can always find something to fit.

And why do they make maternity t-shirts they go in at the waist so they look pretty on the hanger?

MrsMattie Wed 20-Aug-08 23:25:05

I really like H&M maternity wear, but do agree, you seem to have to go up a size. I'm a 12 and have had to get a 14 (right from the get go when I was 16 weeks pregnant and had a small bump).

tostaky Thu 21-Aug-08 08:01:22

Try Gap maternity, they have really good trousers, better than H&M!

EffiePerine Thu 21-Aug-08 09:15:23

The topshop ones are getting the thumbs up from me today. V comfy .

Which Gap stores do maternity? Bet it's not the nearest one to me

TheProvincialLady Thu 21-Aug-08 09:17:31

Oh I was so grateful when I was pregnant with DS because it was the only shop that sold maternity clothes small enough for me. This time however, it is not such an - ahem - issue for meblush [porker]

Heartmum2Jamie Thu 21-Aug-08 10:56:52

I am really glad that H&M stuff comes up a little smaller as it is the only place where I can keep the trousers up! Despite a bump the size of a small country, I have lost weight almost everywhere else and really struggle to find anything that fits.

Flamesparrow Thu 21-Aug-08 10:59:06

Ooh yes, they are hell. I swear they just want to make the lumpy feel lumpier.

They do the best trousers to fit me though, so I get the large and cope <wail>

(well, not NOW, I would look silly, plus my trousers would be round my ankles...)

nappyaddict Thu 21-Aug-08 11:30:46

dorothy perkins are big. i had to get a size 8 in there and they were still falling down throughout most of my pregnancy.

EffiePerine Thu 21-Aug-08 11:56:54

yes the DP mat jeans I have ar a 10 and constantly falling down angry

babyinbelly Thu 21-Aug-08 13:48:08

Never buy from h&m as even their non maternity clothes make me feel like a whale!!!

Botbot Thu 21-Aug-08 13:50:56

I find ALL clothes in H&M are titchy. In most shops a size 18 is loose on me [sticks hand down side of trousers to prove it], but in H&M I didn't fit into a pair of size 22 trousers the other day. I'll be the first to admit I'm on the chubster size, but I am not a size 24!

tostaky Thu 21-Aug-08 14:57:07

i go to the Gap shop in High St Ken. it's next to H&M
