This page www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/nutrition/foodsafety/cheeseexpert/ is helpful. And this one www.netdoctor.co.uk/health_advice/facts/pregnancy_eat_003744.htm.

Limit Tuna because of high mercury levels.

No 99s????

I didn't know that I've had a few this pregnancy. What's the problem with them?

Report
fragola · 20/08/2008 17:07

Don't forget raw and undercooked meat!

Report
fragola · 20/08/2008 17:08

Pepperoni I presume because it's cured rather than cooked, same with salami and parma ham - there's a risk of toxoplasmosis.

I read on another message board that we must not eat mcfurrys from mc d's either

i'll be ignoring that.

you arent meant to have mcflurrys or 99's as they both come out of icecream machines risk of listeria

Report
EffiePerine · 21/08/2008 11:58

peanuts is a bit of a grey area, some say avoid if allergies in family, others say exposure in womb decreases risk of allergy. Prob depends on your family history and how relaxed you are feeling

Personally I am still eating runny eggs and peanut butter...

I've managed to eat mucflurrys for 28 years and never got listeria.

If icecream machines posed any kind of risk to the general population they wouldnt be able to sell them atall surely ?

I have been pregnant 5 times and have never been told this 'risk' it just seems to be something which is talked about on message boards.

cornettos are nice though

yes, but the thing with listeria is that as a normal, healthy, non-pregnant adult if you had caught the bug the chances are you would have had a mild, 'fluey' illness. Not necessarily thought, 'urg, I have listeria'. It's not the mother that listeria really harms (unless you have a weakened immune system), it's the baby.

feta is ok! it's pasteurised. Only unpasteurised cheese is a risk. Deli food is out because it can pick up bacteria being out for hours and with other foods (cross contamination)

Agree with kat - feta is ok
and captainkarvol is right about listeria

kat2907 - hope you are ok, that other thread has got in a bit of a pickle and the op seems to have disappeared, I don't blame her!

if you had listeria, would you know?

I have been a bit rubbish this pregnancy already, looking at that list

what are the dangers of listeria when pg?

Report
ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 21/08/2008 12:29

The dangers of any of those illnesses - listeria, salmonella, toxoplasosis etc are that if you get them in early pregnancy they can cause mc or birth defects. I think you would know if you got salmonella but listeria and toxoplasmosis are just flu like symptoms so you may not know.

Report
CaptainKarvol · 21/08/2008 12:33

If you had listeria, you would probably know you had something but might well think it was just some virus. Dangers are as bad as they can be - miscarriage, stillbirth. Which is NOT to say that they are definitely going to happen even if you were exposed to listeria - you can be exposed and still not catch it. Just that they might, and it's a pretty good idea not to get exposed to the bug if you can help it. Listeria is rare, but concentrated in vulnerable people. I did find one internet link saying about 1/3 of all cases are in pg women.

dinny · 21/08/2008 12:38

shit, have eaten poached eggs I think this pg that weren't hard-cooked

have also had fresh white crab (which IS cooked) - is that OK?
