Sweeps ??

Can anyone tell me anything about having a sweep i am 4 days late with my first baby and maybe having a sweep thismorning please can someone tell me there sucsess rate etc Many thanks.

Just posted on the other thread. What I have to say is BLOODY OUCH. Take paracetemol. And, if you really aren't ready to deliver, then it's not likely to work anyway (see MEars' post on other thread). It's often the first step of induction. Do you want to be induced? If not, I wouldn't recommend a sweep just yet. If you are anxious and want to be induced, then it may start the process for you.

My DD (2nd baby) was 2 weeks late at 9lb 7oz and got stuck, so at 38wks and 5 days with DD2 they did a sweep and yes it hurt and I was uncomfortable for a week until my appointment exactly a week later they had a look (I said I didn't want another sweep) but I was 3cm and then my waters went she was born about 5hrs later only 8lb 4oz. Hope it goes well for you.

Thank you for the info and support Uwila and sophie10 the midwife said that she will not do a sweep untill im a week late which will be this friday. So its good to of heard your coments before hand,I have heard that it can be painful but i am realy worried about the pain of an induced labour as it is supossed to be alot worse.To tell you the truth am just bloody terified of the whole labour thing and am worried that i will not be able to cope. Was labour as bad as you thought it would be or far worse (sad)???

I had a sweep when I was five days late (I now call it a 'supermarket sweep') at 10am in the morning, back to hospital that evening at 8pm was 7cms diliated and ds born just before midnight - yes it was horrible, but worth it!

Sorry I had 2 and no joy
But then I also had a week of prostin gel, ARM and the drip and none of that worked either so think I am rather abnormal!

FWIW I did find it painful but certainly not unbearable. Good luck xx

You will cope (no one could be worse at fear than me) and you get to meet your fab baby at the end.

Sweetbean - make no mistake about it - a sweep is a form of induction and as such I think it's best to leave it at 10 days late!! But hey I have said it many times, been ignored and told later "maybe I was right' LOL!!!!

Sweeps hurt and don't hurt - in the scheme of things that is NOT the issue it's the fact that you are launching your body into a labour when nature would have done it gently. That's my opinion of course.
If you are so worried about noit managing with the pain, have you thought of asking a doula to help?

cheers again for the advise i am so looking forward to seeing his/her littel face that its the only thing that stops me feeling to desperate about the whole thing.I would love some more info on doula's as i know nothing about them.

I agree w/Uwila. YOUCH! But I was also having intermittent contractions by then, so it didn't hurt as badly as those contractions. Paracetemol a must!

Will take some paracetamol for sure hope its not to OOCH but then again it will be nothing compaired with labour will it !!!!MUST JUST FOCUS ON LOVELY END RESULT !!
