it depends really. Took my oldest on holiday to visit grandparents when she was 6 weeks old and was happy to leave her to sleep and be looked after by them when we went out. HOWEVER she was a fabulous sleeper and we were there in the morning.DS1 and DS2 probably began sleeping over at grannys from about 5-6 months but before that if we wanted to go out one set of grandparents would come to us so we got a night out but just had to get up in the morning.
I do know people who have left them younger than this and those who have waited till much later .. it depends on the temperment of the child and the grandparents!

dd1 was 2y4m when I had to have dd2. She stayed at grandmas with my sil and two neices around the same age.

Dd2 never - coming up 4, dd3 never - 18 months old.

DS was 10 mths,
had been sleeping through the night regularly and was very used to granny as he is looked after her two days a week, every week while I go to work.

to be honest I would have done it earlier but the occassion didn't really come up.

4 months - I went to a no children wedding where i was the bridesmaid. (my friend cringes that she stipulated this, now she has a 4 month old baby

My mum would rather babysit at her house than here so DD stays over once every couple of months. I think the fact I did it early really helped her just get used to it. Although I probably wouldn't have chosen to do it that early I dont think it was a bad thing. I missed her like mad though.

about13 mo
would have preferred not to but had a wedding at other end of country, he would have hated journey & we'd have been stressed
doing it again in a coule of weeks

DS was about 13 months, but again, a really good sleeper at that stage. It's only ever happened twice though, and he's 2 in a couple of weeks.

Parents live 5 minutes away though, DC's won't be staying at ILs until much much older (if ever!) as they're an hour away...and to be honest, have never spent any time with DS, so not on the cards any time soon.

DS was 2.3 when he stayed three nights with DH's mum and dad.

DD was 18 months when she first stayed the night there.

thanks guys, it seems everyone is a bit different. my parents in law live 2 mins down the road and have made a nursery in their house ready for new arrival.they want to have him when (if born 2 at 42 weeks)he would be 6 weeks old.we have been invited to a non child friendly wedding, just not sure whether to go or not.they will be used to it as are kindly looking after him regularly due to work but still not sure about overnight at 6 weeks or thereabouts.feeling guilty already!

My DD had a sleepover at 6weeks at my Mum's. Now stays every other week so I can sleep/clean/go out etc.

He's 5.5 years old and hasn't to date.

I'd have let him at about 5 months, I think.

Um niki .....

Don't make any promises about babysitting before you have the baby. Because you might find you don't want to give the baby out overnight, or go to a non child friendly wedding, or go back to work when baby is a few weeks old. Just saying .....

I think it prob depends on your parents too. My Mum is only in her 40's, had three of her own kids, my bro is 8 so the baby stuff is still fairly recent and I trust her 100% to make the right decisions for my daughter.

Therefore I have no problems at all leaving her and whilst I was glad to have her back I didn't spend all night missing her or anything.

Never. It wasn't an option available to us. And if it was, I'm not sure we would have anyway.

DS was 2.0 - he had to as I was in hospital having DD. It was too early for him (he was scratching at front door in middle of night looking for me). This was with granny who he had seen and loved playing with every day for the past few months.

Depends on child.

DTDs were about 15m (at SILs) and I had to go and fetch them as tehy weren't settled.

DD3 is there now at 27m and we haven't heard from the grandparents yet so that must be either very very good and she isn't bothered or grandparents are lying in heep somewhere exhausted and run rings around and can't get to teh phone

Unfortunately my dc's are aged 12 and 8 years and have never slept at Grandma's!

6 weeks is v early - even if you are bottle feeding. If you bf 6 Weeks is very early to start getting to grips with expressing etc. IMO.
