Morning Sickness - what's the deal with it!

Hello All,

Got the BFP last week which was a great surprise, now I am sitting and thinking what's next?
Am I supposed to feel nauseous?
Is it too early at 5 wks?
When does it usually kick in?
Is morning sickness the same as having nausea or is it the extreme which involves vomitting?
Have any of you gone through pregnancy without the nausea signs?
Many questions.... please reply.... i guess it will be long 9 months. Still I hope I get there as already it feels like the time has stopped.

Cheers!

Greenbug

Hi Greenbug,

I had morning sickness and it started when I woke up and went in the afternoon, it passed when I was about 14 weeks and started pretty much when I found out I was PG which was 6 weeks (I think) and don't worry not everyone gets it!

I have however read a thread recently and people were saying they had it all day or just on a night and not morning!

If you do get it, I reccommend, the wrist bands that are used for travel sickness and rich tea and ginger biscuits!
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you though!

Just in case

Congratulations Greenbug.

My experience of m/s was none at all with baby no1,but lost due to ectopic at 6wks,so could have been too early.

None at all,not even vague queasyness with dd.

With this baby,I had no pregnancy symptoms at all until 7wks,then all of a sudden felt nauseous. It was worst at about 2-3pm,probably because I was getting tired then.Although I felt terrible I wasn't actually sick,so I was lucky.

I'm no expert, but I think m/s can be anything from vague nausea to full blown puking,it all depends on how your body reacts to the hormone changes.

Best of luck!

yep, you can feel nauseous at 5 weeks

fairly likely to kick in as being sick a few weeks later
fairly likely to last until approx end of first trimester

some women are never sick/nauseous at all
a few unlucky women are sick up to several times a day for 9 whole months (or the majority of)

so everyone is different and all you can do is see what happens. things that might help with nausea/sickness are:- cup of tea and plain biscuits in morning BEFORE you get out of bed, ginger, anti-sickness travel bands

my experience:- nausea/retching 5 weeks to 7 weeks
vomiting (usually just once in the morning from 7 weeks to 18 weeks).

best of luck

I agree with Newbarnsleygirl-those wristbands were a life saver!

Not everyone gets it - many people escape altogether. Some get nausea, some vomiting - some morning, some evening, some 24hours. As discussed on other threads, I have had the extreme form with both my pregnancies. Both times it started at around 6 weeks and last time it stopped around 12 - hopefully this time will be the same. If you get no symptoms, count yourself very lucky!

Congratulations and good luck

I began feeling ill at about 5/6 weeks. I very rarely actually vomited, just felt more nauseous than i ever have before.
Couldn't stand up for long periods of time, and had to keep going and sitting down at work.
Didn't want anything to eat because the smell of food made me feel ill, but I found that i could stomach boiled sweets, or jelly sweets which helped a bit.
Also drank ginger tea...
the sickness eventually went away after about 14 weeks.

With my first child the nausea began at 8 weeks and ended at 14 weeks. It peaked around 10-12 weeks. It started at 4pm and lasted until I went to bed. I often ate no dinner but was able to make up for it by eating during the day when I felt absolutely normal.

I know lots of people who have experienced no m/s.

This time my nausea started at week 5! I'm 9 weeks now and have all day nausea with the odd vomitting episode if I eat the wrong thing or drink too quickly.

Try not to worry greenbug - only a few percent of people have all day m/s. About 40% of people escape with no m/s. You're most likely to be in that category than the former.

Hello All,

Thank you sooooooooooooooooo much for your replies. It is relief reading all your different experiences. I was actually starting to worry for NOT having it. But if it comes at least I have a whole list of different remedies for it!

Thank you once again!!!!!

I've been pregnant twice and never had it. I know other people who haven't had it either. I'm very grateful because I think it sounds awful.

Sorry to hijack but just wondering if anyone got it with their first but not their second? I had it really bad with my first and so am hoping to escape next time!

btw there is a very vague nausea ina the background, but it doesn't stop me from eating, in fact by eating i make it go away, so I have already put on few pounds.... and all the pregnancy books i have read talk about m/s and how women actually loose weight in the first trimester..... it's not fair that the 40% who don't get it don't get mentioned at all. Thank goodness for mumsnet !!!

I felt horrible every day, exactly at 4.30pm which is when my colleague used to drop me off in town after work. It lasted from immediately I discovered I was pregnant (8 weeks) until 13 weeks, & then stopped, literally overnight.

Never actually puked but used to feel faint, dizzy & as if horrible warm waves of 'uuuuuurrrrgh' were washing over me - a bit like the feeling you get after you've had a nasty shock, but going on for HOURS until I finally crawled into bed. Ugh.

I started puking 5 times a day and pretty much feeling nauseous the rest of the time from 2 weeks after conception with both my pregnancies. It stopped almost overnight around 4 months with both pregnancies. With my second (but not my first) pregnancy it started again around 8 months.

My friend who was pregnant at the same time as me said she felt a little like gagging one day when she was brushing her teeth, but other than that never felt a minute of nausea with either of her pregnancies. (She is also the one who gave birth to her baby 45 minutes after she noticed her first contraction!)

Poor you. I still remember that awful nausea, even though my youngest is now 21. Strangely, I found that it was helped by eating. Not meals, as I couldn't face them, but frequent tiny amounts of stuff like digestive biscuits or toast and marmite. I hope it eases off soon. Hopefully it'll only be for a few weeks and then you'll feel much better.
Congratulations, by the way .

Greenbug, I think by trial and error you will find what works for you, but most people swear by eating little and often, eg dry crackers, a bit of toast etc. And don't worry overmuch at this stage about what you are eating (in terms of how healthy it is), just eat what you can, when you can! I found sucking mints and eating ginger biscuits helped me first time around, but I can't look at either this time. I've cut milk out of my diet and that helps a lot, making up for it by eating plenty of cheese!

You need this website - aimed at people with hyperemesis gravidarum, but very useful for those with less severe symptoms too. Work your way through the self-help tips (link on left-hand side of the page).

Chocolate Complan is good if you're hardly able to eat anything (pretend it's hot chocolate); ice lollies; hot water with a slice of lemon in it; ginger beer; a little bit of whatever you fancy, however weird or junky ....

Good luck

With ds,I think I started feeling "uncomfortable" within the first few weeks, I only remember that because I was a day late on my xmas drink up and HAD to find out (i never go past 28days!)and by Boxing day I was starting to feel a bit sickly (thought I 'd eaten too much turkey ) By beginning of Jan I was being sick and has constant nausea. I was actually sick up to 15 times a days and by about 13 weeks I started to feel better!!
With dd, it was pretty similar, only being sick up to eight times a day but continuing until I was 16 weeks!! YUK,,,YUK,,,YUK!!!

Make the most of it, you may be one of those lucky ones who sails through it.

Congratulations BTW!

Congratulations on the pregnancy greenbug and sympathies for the morningsickness!! It is really hard having it whilst working - I remember it well. I unfortunately had it right through all four of my pregnancies and was sick at approximately 10.30 every day! I have to say though, that being sick was the best thing for me - I would feel much better afterwards. If I wasn't sick I would feel nauseous for the rest of the day. My boss (male) was not terribly sympathetic. After I came out of the bathroom after my morning retch he made a comment about it 'going with the territory'. Would like to have seen him go through it grrrr!! But don't they say it is the sign of a healthy pregnancy - or is that just to make you feel a little better? Oh, as a little side point, I also heard it said that girls tend to cause ms more than boys (another wife's tale ofcourse) and I did have 4 girls...... You will find out what works for you, and the chances are it won't last. But if it doesn't you will get used to it incredibly!! And it will be worth it in the end. All the best. xx

Don't speak to me about morning sickness! I had it all day every day for 6 months. Not just feeling sick actually being sick 3 or 4 times a day. Everything I ate came up again (sorry) Had no cravings went off food completely just the thought of it made me ill. I lived on cream crackers, jacket potato with cheese and fruit. At 6 months it wore off and I ate for england then at 8 months it came back again but not as bad. Sorry I don't have any advice as nothing worked apart from the travel sickness bands a little bit. Looking back I don't know how I did cope what with going to work and organising a wedding!
