done too much, or SPD?

i have done a lot of walking today, and now can barely walk without being in pain. I have had to arranage a lift this afternoon for getting me to midwife appointment and picking up dd1 from school.

The pain is concentrated in my lower back, and lower pelvic area. This happened when pregnant with dd2, but not until 35 weeks, and i was perscribed paracetamol and codeine, but felt very out of it. I am 31/32 weeks now.

The midwife said it could just be ;one of those things' but we are lucky to have this physio drop in thing ere so i will go and see!

someone (mears i think) said for spd, press your pubic bone and if it hurts like hell it is probably spd......

atm i am using all of dh pillows for extra support in bed on legs/hips as he is in hospital again, but then the kids want to climb in as well and have to get their own pillows.

i just couldnt belive the pain today, was in tears walking to mieows from the hospital (2 min walk maximum!)

Hi Misdee - I have been suffering from lower back pelvic pain and got an appointment with the physio midwife a couple of months ago. She gave me a very large tubigrip to wear during the day - it fits from just under my boobs to the bottom of my bump. She also told to me do tummy exersises - where you breath in like you are tightening a belt to the next notch and then hold it there while counting and breathing to 5 - do this 5 times 3 times a day - this will help strengthen your tummy muscles - and then pelvic floor exersices too. When you stand up squeese your bum cheeks together and make sure you sit with your back straight and try not to walk with your bump out, also get a straight backed chair to sit on rather than a sofa (she recommended trying to borrow an old fashioned wing backed chair if anyone had one - but I use a rocking chair) what else....Pillows between your knees to sleep on but also more between your ankles so your ankles are highter than your knees. No lifting, ironing, pushing shopping trolley, vaccuming, etc. Think that was most of it - oh towel folded under bump when you are lying down to support your bump, and rolled towel to sit in small of your back when sitting to correct posture. Sit when putting on clothes rather than hop on one leg, there that's it I think, and I have to say that as long as I am careful most days are fairly pain free now. HTH

As you can imagine I exaggerated to DP and said that the midwife was even concerned about standing to wash up, make sandwiches, dust (as this causes sneezing and may strain my back) cleaning of any sort etc etc.

Hi you two long-sufferers!! If it's any comfort I get a lot of pain from walking any distance too. And after dd was born I could barely walk 50 yards without having to sit down.

To be honest it's easier to cycle, cos you just sit there and it's non weight-bearing, if that makes any sense. Even so, yesterday I pulled a groin muscle getting off the bike. Plus before Christmas I managed to pull a muscle in the top of my bump (who'd have thought there was a muscle there to pull!!). Just thought I'd make sure you don't think I'm bionic woman !

oh but you are, pidge!
i am in awe of your pregnant athleticism!

Report
Pidge · 05/01/2005 15:10

Am just very lucky that I've been so well - but believe me I'm beginning to creak quite a bit these days! It's a darn inconvenient thing that walking and standing around can be so painful.

Anyway, think the cycling will have to bite the dust soon as the bump is beginning to get in the way of my pedalling!
