BFP - but small bleed on day period was due - advice please

Hello -

Can anyone offer any advice - I got a BFP yesterday (14 days after ovulation) but in the evening had a red bleed which i assumed was my period coming after all. However, it stopped and i have no bleeding today. Could this be implantation - is there any hope? Should i do a pregnancy test in a few days to see if still pregnant? Has anyone else had this at 4 weeks?

Any advice would be appreciated, I had a mc in August and i am very anxious.

Thanks LCY

Thanks Scorpio1 - do you know what GP will do - i have a phobia about the EPU after poor treatment in August and really dont want to go back there.

How are you doing?

it could totally be implantation, i had a bright red bleed with my third pregnancy. but the absolutely definite thing is that you need to tell your GP and see if he or she can get you an early scan to rule out anything else. congratulations. now phone your doc.

Sorry, im not used to EPU's and things, so im not really sure. Maybe they can just reassure you or d some blood tests to check your hcg levels are rising.

I'm fine thankyou, having a little girl!

no-one likes the EPU, they're not fun places. i had dealings with our ones three times, with only one 'good' result. what about asking him to refer you to another hospital this time, if there is one?

Apparently implantation bleeds are very common. I thought my expected period was just shorter and lighter than usual but weeks later found out that I was pg and that it must have been an implantation bleed.

PG symptoms led me to take a test which was positive and because I had no clue of dates the GP sent me for an early pregnancy scan.

If you are pg then any test from the pharmacy will tell you - you can ask the pharmacist which are the most sensitive. Don't wait to do a test at the surgery - the result could take days AND it seems they use very insensitive tests and can give a false negative.

Lcy - I had the same last year, I got a tiny bleed, then did a test, and was pg... I had been so disappointed when I had the bleed, and was amazed to be pregnant! I now have a little girl.

I would wait a couple of weeks, and do another test, just incase it was a phantom pregnancy (had one of those too) - but otherwise.. GO FOR IT!!!

okay, bitter experience has taught me that waiting a couple of weeks might not be a good idea. phone the doc.

Did you have an ectopic Prisoner?

two. bright red bleeding with one, no bleeding with the other and bright red bleeding with my delicious dd. so you see, nothing means anything and you should try not to worry because it's much more likely to be a wee implantation bleed.

but best plan is to take care of yourself by getting a scan to double-check. they may not want to do one before 6 weeks or an hcg of 1000 though, different protocols for different things.

I had an implantation bleed which I assumed was my period starting
I didn't get a BFP til a week later

There is still hope

or, they might just take a look and in the absence of any other symptoms decide it was an implantation bleed, which would be fine and dandy.

Thanks everyone - i just phoned NHS direct and lovely nurse said i should go to doctor tommorow so i will do that. She said it is a waiting game and mc at this stage is very common. Fingers crossed it is implantation - thanks for sharing your experiences.

good luck! MUCH more chance of it being nothing to worry about.

Lcy- this can happen around the time your period would have been due and doesn't necessarily mean that its all over at all. There is hope!

I got a BFP two weeks ago after having a mc in August. I tested positive on the Monday and on the Wednesday, when my period would have been due, started having cramps and had some spotting that night. The cramps lasted around five days and were really painful at times. I had some more brown spotting on the Sunday night just when my period would have been finishing.

I did subsequently go to my GP who would have sent me to EPU to rule out ectopic but by that time the cramps/spotting had been gone for a day or so. However although I wanted to avoid the EPU as well (not bad service just bad memories)on my GPs advice if I had continued to have any pain or bleeding, I would have gone.

I don't know that doing more pregnancy tests is particularly conclusive as I believe the crucial fact is not whether HCG is there but whether the HCG level is doubling 48 hourly -but the EPU can take bloods to measure this. However because I was so early I did do a couple of tests a few days apart at the time and mistakenly or not I did get reassurance that the lines got darker with each test.

I am now nauseous and exhausted with tender breasts and deep down I do believe it will work out this time.

Thinking of you and praying that everything works out for you.

I had exact same thing with 2 of my pregs, started bleeding on the day due to come on and it lasted a couple of hours then stopped, I dont think it any thing to worry about. Hope all ok

Hi Lcy, thinking of you darl. what a waiting game for you

Lcy - I had a similar experience, and all was well - eventually put down to being either a threatened m/c or implantation bleeding. GP referred me to EPU to rule out an ectopic PG - I had a scan and bloods taken.

I agree with the other poster - GP surgery PG tests are if anything less sensitive than the ones you can buy, so I wouldn't rely on them.

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 04/12/2007 20:30

but for the record the darkness of line thing isn't that likely to be relevant. the tests are guaranteed to a certain sensitivity, but it's across a range because of the manufacturing process so a test might appear darker then one taken ten minutes later. definitely not something to be relied on, unlike a scan at the much-dreaded EPU. what happened with MP was great, but i know women who've had emergency operations and nearly died who would have had identical symptoms. that said, it really IS more likely to be absolutely fine.

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 04/12/2007 20:32

sorry, to be clear i mean a different test taken ten mins later. or even both dipped at the same time, iykwim?

Thanks everyone - i always thought it was the getting pregnant bit that was difficult - how naive! GP it is...

Lcy - I too had a BFP two weeks ago and a bleed, bright red day one, brown and scanty for next four - went for a scan today and the early pregnancy assessment unit and there is indeed a little bean 5 weeks 2 days estimated in there. Have to go back on New year's eve for another scan - you don't get fetal poles (a heartbeat - till at least six weeks) so don't stress out too much but go to your GP and ask for a referral for a viability scan. You'll probably wait five days and you may have to have an internal u/s but it may set your mind at rest.

Sorry Lcy didn't see you'd had a bad time at EPAU before. Funnily enough I did too when I miscarried, they were frankly quite rude but today I went and it was totally different staff and they couldn't have been nicer. They can offer you a blood test for hormone levels as well as a scan to check they are doubling - often early scans are a waste of time because if you don't see a heartbeat you panic (well I did anyway) but everything is still fine.
