++ ketones in urine

I have been to the dr as I keep getting random stomach pains which radiate down my right leg, they checked my urine and said I have ++ketones and that I’m not eating enough sugar so to try drinking apple juice watered down. I have been really nauseous so have just been sipping water and mainly eating savoury food.

I have no idea if ++ is high, he did ask if I’m diabetic, but just wondered if I should be concerned? I’m 8 weeks pregnant and currently trying to sip apple juice :-/ has anyone had this at all?

Ketones can be caused by not eating enough carbs/sugar and dehydration. What’s your diet like?

Ketones in pregnancy aren’t good and so they do need to be addressed.

Lots of women with gestational diabetes are at risk of ketones because they have to limit their carbs. I would mention it to your midwife but I wouldn’t have thought ketones alone would be a sign of GD.

Thanks for replying @teakind I thought my diet was fairly good, I tend to have cereal with almond milk for breakfast, a roll or sandwich for lunch with a packet of crisps, and a home cooked meal for dinner- ranging from spag Bol, chilli, stir fry, jacket potato’s/salad. I don’t have pudding (never have) and the only thing different is I’m not drinking squash (but I was drinking sugar free squash)

I just thought it was strange, I have been pregnant 5 other times (2 children) and never had this before. Bmi normal too. Maybe it’s just I didn’t eat enough for breakfast x

I had ketones but it was severe dehydration due to hypermesis so not keeping food or drink down. Think I had ++++ at the worst point.

Doesn’t sound like it’s your diet in that case! It’s one of the reasons the keto diet isn’t recommended in pregnancy but you have a varied diet.

Do you drink enough water?

Oh blimey @MrsH497 that sounds awful :(

@Teakind I thought the same, I probably could drink more but have been making an effort to drink more than usual. Will up it just to be on the safe side. Been trying to drink lots of sips as just feel awful today, but I know not drinking enough won’t help

I've had ketones in previous pregnancies and was told lemonade was a good drink to help, full fat and even flat if thats all you could stomach.

I had ++++ and also ended up in hospital with the drip - but I found the anti nausea meds they gave me really helpful. Could you ask about that?

@Marnie1234 I was the same as you a few weeks ago, admitted 4 times with ++++ each time due to hyperemesis. It is so miserable, I really feel for you. Check out the hyperemesis support thread on here, I found it really helpful. Hope you start seeing some improvement soon xx

Oh goodness I feel like I have worried over nothing, I’m so sorry to all of you that have been so poorly.

My dr did mention the anti sickness medication but as I am managing to keep food down did seem reluctant to give them to me, which is fine. Think I need to make more of an effort with my fluids, especially as I have such painful constipation :( I do have something for that though as my stomach is in so much pain.
