Mat1B form - how does it work?

Hi all,

Just wanted some quick advice on this as I'm struggling to find the answer online! This is my first pregnancy so I'm clueless! I'm 19+6.

My work needs me to notify them of my pregnancy and give them the Mat1B no later than 15 weeks before the expected week of childbirth, so I believe that's week 25.

I need to have a C-section, and I'll get my appointment for that in January or February I think. But I guess it means my expected week of childbirth won't be week 40 but before? Does that mean I should notify them before week 25? My manager knows but this is more of the HR side of things.

I saw the midwife on Friday and she said it's too early to give me the Mat1B, and the midwife will give it at the next appointment, which is when I'm 25 weeks. I'm now concerned that I should tell them by week 23, and certainly by week 25, but I won't have the Mat1B until it's too late.

Is there any other way I can get hold of the Mat1B? When is the earliest I can get it?

Thank you!

You can usually your MatB1 after your 20 week scan and it’s based on your due date and not the date you have a c section/are induced. You just need to tell your work you are pregnant, your due date and when you will be taking your leave; submitting your form can wait although sometimes HR need a reminder of this.

I received my one right after my 20 week scan, it’s just a small slip confirming your pregnancy and due date. Midwife should ask you about it at your 25 week appointment too! I told my employers I was pregnant when I was 4 months and HR informed me to send them the MATB1 form when I’m 25 weeks but I handed it right after my 20 week scan.

Pretty much my issue

Ive messaged my midwife and told her my employer needs it by the 25th week so she said she would organise it for me after my 20th week.

I rang my midwife after my 20 week scan and she organised it for me as I needed to hand it to work before my 25 week appt. They aren't allowed to give it out until you are over 20 weeks.

when I went for the 20wk scan they said they would have given it me then but had run out of forms and would give it to me at the 25wk appt. Like you I said that was too late for my work, so they posted it to me.

AFAIA, you have to tell them by week 25, but the MatB1 can be handed in anytime before the 28 days leading up to you leaving/maternity pay starting.
