Clearly I have no idea what I'm doing since I didn't even post my message!

I am almost 8 weeks pregnant and for about a week now I have had light brown discharge when I wipe. There has never been enough to be in my underwear and a few times it seems to have stopped but it is still there. I have read countless threads here and Googled the heck out of it and it's a mixed bag really, in terms of what might be going on and what to do. I am constantly ruminating on it and worrying and I just don't know if it would be worth calling the doctors to discuss it as I feel like, given the current circumstances, I will just be told to wait it out.

Has anyone had any experience of this at this stage of pregnancy and if you contacted your GP, did the response give you some reassurance?

Thank you x

Hi SnickersBloom. Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy. I would suggest contacting your midwife if you are concerned, they may refer you to the early pregnancy unit (EPU) to check all is well.
I really don't want to alarm you with what I write, so please don't take what I write as some kind of horror story. Please don't ignore bleeding, it could be nothing, but it might be something.

I became aware of my first pregnancy because of brown bleeding. Initially I just thought it was my period because of the timing, but it wasn't 'normal' and it went on far too long, several weeks in the end. Further investigation by the EPU diagnosed a missed miscarriage, though they were never really sure what happened.

My second pregnancy progressed normally until around 8-9 weeks when I began experiencing brown bleeding. Initially I thought it was maybe a delayed implantation bleed, or I'd got the dates wrong. I contacted my midwife, who told me to call back in a week if it was still the same. I did so but unfortunately they didn't call me back due to some mix up at their end with phone numbers, this was on a Friday. A couple of days later I collapsed and was taken to hospital in an ambulance for emergency surgery. It turned out the bleeding was caused by an ectopic pregnancy which had ruptured causing internal bleeding and more pain than I've ever experienced before or since. You can imagine my shock! I did not experience any other symptoms so there was nothing that pointed to an ectopic other than the brown bleeding. The recovery took several weeks.
Because I'd lost a tube the chance of getting pregnant again was much reduced, but I was advised that if I did then I had to have an early scan due to my increased risk of an ectopic.
I believe my first pregnancy was actually an ectopic that naturally miscarried.

The next pregnancy happened a few months later. Again I experienced brown bleeding very similar to that in previous pregnancies. So I contacted the EPU who saw me straight away and established the pregnancy was in the right place and not an ectopic. The bleeding stopped after about a week.
The early scan and the routine scans indicated all was well throughout. This time the pregnancy progressed normally and my son was born healthy a week after his due date.

Again I really don't want to scare you. Brown bleeding can indicate all sorts of things. Most likely it's nothing to worry about, but please contact your midwife and ask to be checked by the EPU to be sure. Don't let them fob you off.
I wish you all the best with your pregnancy

hey @SnickersBloom! i'm. 8+6 and i started to have some brown spotting last friday (when i was 7+3) - it was really light, mostly when i wiped and occasionally a bit more in my underwear, but even so i assumed the worst (i had a mmc a few months back and i've been pretty anxious this pregnancy!). I already had a reassurance scan booked for the following monday so waited until then - and everything looked ok, they found a tiny (they had to zoom in to find it) subchorionic hematoma, which they didn't seem to concerned by and said it'd probably resolve on its own or be reasbsorbed, and fortunately it seems to have stopped now (i had about 7 days of spotting in total), so i'm just hoping everything is okay!

I'd definitely call your local EPU or get your GP to refer you to get it checked out - they will likely do a TV scan so they can see what's happening. Hopefully it's nothing - i read a lot about this last week too and it sounds like there can be lots of causes, but with any bleeding/spotting i think the only way to know for sure what's happening is to get a scan. It's so horrible to be worrying constantly! fingers crossed for you!

@Itsorange Thank you so much for sharing that with me. I'm so glad you have your beautiful boy now, but what a difficult thing to go through. I will call my GP practice now and hopefully speak to someone. I already have a little girl and didn't experience this at all in my first pregnancy which is why it's caught me off guard. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.

@northerngal20 I have an early scan booked for 28th November and I was wondering if I should wait until then as I guess, there's not much I can do if things aren't meant to be this time. Hopefully my GP doesn't fob me off as I've not hit 8 weeks yet. I really am grateful to you for taking the time to respond to me.

Thank you x

Update in case anyone else in my position stumbles across this post: Called EPU yesterday afternoon and the midwife was lovely. Booked me in for a scan this morning and all is well and as it should be! The sonographer said that nine times out of ten they don't find a cause for bleeding but encouraged always to get checked. Grateful to both of you for the push of encouragement.

So glad to hear that OP, you must be very relieved. Sometimes these things just happen. Best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy
