Hi SnickersBloom. Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy. I would suggest contacting your midwife if you are concerned, they may refer you to the early pregnancy unit (EPU) to check all is well.
I really don't want to alarm you with what I write, so please don't take what I write as some kind of horror story. Please don't ignore bleeding, it could be nothing, but it might be something.
I became aware of my first pregnancy because of brown bleeding. Initially I just thought it was my period because of the timing, but it wasn't 'normal' and it went on far too long, several weeks in the end. Further investigation by the EPU diagnosed a missed miscarriage, though they were never really sure what happened.
My second pregnancy progressed normally until around 8-9 weeks when I began experiencing brown bleeding. Initially I thought it was maybe a delayed implantation bleed, or I'd got the dates wrong. I contacted my midwife, who told me to call back in a week if it was still the same. I did so but unfortunately they didn't call me back due to some mix up at their end with phone numbers, this was on a Friday. A couple of days later I collapsed and was taken to hospital in an ambulance for emergency surgery. It turned out the bleeding was caused by an ectopic pregnancy which had ruptured causing internal bleeding and more pain than I've ever experienced before or since. You can imagine my shock! I did not experience any other symptoms so there was nothing that pointed to an ectopic other than the brown bleeding. The recovery took several weeks.
Because I'd lost a tube the chance of getting pregnant again was much reduced, but I was advised that if I did then I had to have an early scan due to my increased risk of an ectopic.
I believe my first pregnancy was actually an ectopic that naturally miscarried.
The next pregnancy happened a few months later. Again I experienced brown bleeding very similar to that in previous pregnancies. So I contacted the EPU who saw me straight away and established the pregnancy was in the right place and not an ectopic. The bleeding stopped after about a week.
The early scan and the routine scans indicated all was well throughout. This time the pregnancy progressed normally and my son was born healthy a week after his due date.
Again I really don't want to scare you. Brown bleeding can indicate all sorts of things. Most likely it's nothing to worry about, but please contact your midwife and ask to be checked by the EPU to be sure. Don't let them fob you off.
I wish you all the best with your pregnancy
