Pregnancy

Nothing seen at a 4+6 scan

Hi all having a tricky time. Just finished ivf treatment and ended up in hospital with ohss, then tested positive for covid. while there my bloods were monitored and I found out I was pregnant. So as I slowly improved they did a scan before I left, still showed fluid from the ohss but also it didn’t show anything regarding the pregnancy, I was told to ring my clinic ASAP for another scan. Which I can’t because I am covid positive. I’m just wondering if anyone can help? What would they usually see on a scan at 4+6 ?

I’m so low and unwell. I just can’t believe the luck we’ve had.

well, normal scans would be really hard put to find anything on a scan that early.
Even at 6 weeks, they often have to use a vaginal scan to see anything.

good luck Flowers

That is so so early @Fightingtobepositive I'd be surprised if they DID find anything. Try not to worry I'm sure all is fine, wait a few weeks until there's something more visible Smile

@Fightingtobepositive early to see anything ! Usually can see the sac and HB at 6/7 but even then sometimes need an internal wand!

Thanks ladies. I’m just on the edge of my nerves because the sonographer literally only said nothing found regarding a pregnancy. Then the doctor briefly says as I’m leaving. Nothing was found on the scan so book another one asap with your clinic. Nothin else, no one at all said it was early days or anything. I am very quickly losing the will this week x

My clinic wouldn't/won't scan under 6 weeks because it's mostly too small to see. It's so tiny at the beginning. And eveb at 6 weeks tgere isn't much to see. Sometimes they can see a heartbeat around 7 weeks.

@rorosemary my clinic are refusing to scan me until earliest 15 Oct, so just over 6 weeks then. Because they say there’s no point but obviously I can’t help thinking it’s because I’ve had covid. Why would the hospital team make such a comment to me if there was nothing to worry about.

Thanks for your reply. I’m just gutted that I had to leave hospital with that type of comment and now all I can do is wait xx

It look ages and an internal scan to find mine at 6 weeks.

It's not because you have/had Covid. It's about the pregnancy being large enough to be seen on a scan. Before that there's no point, and it's actually a good thing, as they're saving you from a potentially worrying scan where they cannot see anything, but the reason is simply that it's too early. Be patient, and get well soon.

I was told by the EPU they would never normally scan before 6 weeks. I started bleeding at 5 weeks 6 days, and the lady on the phone said she would tell them I was 6 weeks or they wouldn’t see me.
Wishing you lots of luck x

Wayyyyyy to early to see anything on the scan. At even 6 weeks it's still hit and miss. Personally I wouldn't have an early scan until 7 weeks. Thats unless your having pains or bleeding

They couldn't see anything at my week 5 scan. But they saw development at by 6+3 scan. Just wait for a few weeks and get your energy back up again. Hope you feel better soon OP!

No it's not because of covid. I've been going to my clinic since 2013 and they didn't scan till 6 weeks in those past years because it was too small to see.

Was it an internal scan OP? As so many others have said 4 wks is way too early. Was it even a dedicated maternity ultrasonographer? 6 wks is the absolute minimum and my EPU won’t do a reassurance scan before 8 wks (I have recurrent miscarriage so qualify for these) unless you’re bleeding. It’s not because you have covid its because they don’t want to waste resources and cause unnecessary worry by scanning too early. Personally, I think scanning you at 4+6 was a bit inappropriate especially when they clearly weren’t set up to give appropriate counselling.

This is exactly why we don't scan below 6 weeks for pregnancy - it's so unreliable that it creates anxiety.

In your case, OP, they were almost certainly scanning to check for ovarian follicles, not for a pregnancy, and this should have been explained to you. If you had been further along, the pregnancy would have been seen at the same time, but not at under 5w.

Thank you so much for your reply’s they really are great support. I think if we’d been in a normal situation and done a test then had to wait I’d be fine. It’s just the whole situation.

I thought they were going down to check my lungs and ovaries but then when I got back to the ward the doctor made a big thing about how nothing was seen regarding pregnancy and I needed to ring my private clinic ASAP! I’m just so gutted they’d blurt our these type of comments
And then not take the time to sit and talk to me.

I was 4+6 @MissLucyEyelesbarrow a day from
5 which is why I am Worried x

Hi, OP - I didn't explain that very clearly. I meant that you specifically were under 5 weeks.

It's normal not to see a pregnancy under 6w.

I am sorry that this wasn't explained better to you. I can only guess, but I imagine that the doctor was trying to stress to you that you will still need your normal early pregnancy scan - he didn't want you to assume that you didn't need it because you had just been scanned. But he obviously wasn't very clear.

Thank you for explaining @MissLucyEyelesbarrow i hope so. I’ve been reading all sorts, like you should at least see the sac etc. But I have to try and not worry for the time Being and focus on getting well I guess. I hope after all this we have a little toughie in there waiting x

@MnM156 can I just ask that when you say they didn’t see anything, is that like absolutely nothing? We’re they concerned at the time, or did they say it was to early? X

@Fightingtobepositive
They told me that it 'could be too early or it could be that there is absolutely nothing'. They could see a sac but it was empty the first time they scanned. I was 5+3 weeks on that day. They then asked me to come back again one week later and then they could see that the sac was no longer empty and that all was well and it was in fact too early the first time. I was 6+3 weeks on the second scan.

@MnM156 they said they couldn’t see anything at all which is what’s got me in such a tiz. Surely they’d atleast see the sac 😖
