Amoxicillin in pregnancy?

Patience1990 · 04/09/2020 12:56

Just been prescribed amoxicillin 500mg for a uti. Am 27+3. Am just totally freaked out about taking something that could harm the baby.

Had a miscarriage last year at 11 weeks and was taking amoxicillin then.

Am I being totally over the top? I've got severe health anxiety for the baby and just want to do what is best.

You need the amoxicillin - I would think you run a much greater risk having a UTI that's untreated. Why not ring a pharmacist to put your mind at rest. Thanks

Who prescribes and did they know you were pregnant?
Did you ask at the time if it was safe?

Would have been best to ask at the time than to rely on people on the internet.

It’s fine

@Rudolphian I did ask at the time thank you very much, and would never just rely on strangers in the internet as you so kindly put it. What I don't need is a telling off.

He wasn't my usual gp and gave me the "weighing up risks but should be fine" talk. He knew I was pregnant but am just looking to see if anyone has had any experiences with amoxicillin whilst pregnant or advice they could share?

Hey @Patience1990 in the first trimester I got bitten by a tick - weird right?
Anyway, I had to take amoxicillan for three weeks because of the risk of getting lymes.

The reason they prescribed amoxicillan rather than the usual antibiotic you get for tick bites was because I'm pregnant and it was considered safer.

Hope this reassures you.

I'm not telling you off.
But if your GP told you it was safe not sure what 10 ladies on the internet saying it's safe will add, or if you get more saying they would avoid or have been told it isn't safe.
Ok but as far as I know it's safe.

I'm 37 weeks and have taken amoxicillin three times during this pregnancy.

There are more risks from not treating the UTI than taking amoxicillin.

It’s safe. Definitely doesn’t cause miscarriage or any other problems.
But if it would help your anxiety because of last time, there are other antibiotic options you can take that are also safe and won’t be tied to your miscarriage in the same way - nitrofurantoin, or a cephalosporin.

@TenThousandSpoons0 @Yorkshirepudding1987

Were you on 500mg three times a day? It just seems so much to me. Feel slightly better now I know there are others that have used it too and been fine.

@Wellimworriednow thanks! I feel a little better knowing others have taken it too and haven't had any complications. Were you on a three a day dose?

Yes I was on 500mg 3x a day

Yep, three a day for 21 days. My doctor spoke to a specialist in ticks at the local hospital about the medication too.

@Yorkshirepudding1987 @Wellimworriednow thanks. That's reassured me slightly. Just taken the first one now and just going to keep a close eye on kicks etc for the next few days for peace of mind.

I was on 500 x 3 times a day for 5 days due to a tooth abscess. The dentist checked with my GP who said an out of control infection was a far greater risk to the baby and me. All was well 😀

I’m 31 weeks and recently had to take amoxicillin for a UTI. It is safe to take in pregnancy. By contrast, if you don’t take it, your UTI will likely progress to a kidney infection which could cause you permanent kidney damage and lead to you giving birth prematurely, putting your baby at all kinds of risks. You need to take it.

FWIW I was worried about the effect it might have on my microbiome and if that could affect the baby, and apparently you recover back to 90% of normal within 6-8 weeks.

Yep I took it in pregnancy I think for 10 days for a tooth infection. Can’t remember dose but my now almost three year old was 100 percent fine and still is. It’s understandable to feel anxious but as pps have said the risk of not taking them is greater
