Next to Me Cribs

I've bought a next to me crib, which came with a mattress and also a couple of fitted sheets. This might be a stupid question but what kind of bedding do I need for it?

Pillow/duvet/cases etc? Any tips where I can buy them the right size? Can't find anywhere!

I would say probably just a swaddle or sleeping bag. Newborns shouldn’t have loose bedding due to the risk of sids, and should lie completely flat with no pillow or anything. Swaddles are great I think - we bought Velcro ones from amazon which were pretty cheap

Sleeping bag or swaddle nothing else needed, i find they save me so much anxiety of wondering if baby has kicked the blanket off it got it over his head. I found the tommee tippee ones great to start with then moved to using aldi ones now hes a bit bigger.

Have a look on the lullaby trust for sleeping guidance. Mine only ever had a blanket and was too small too kick it off whilst in the next to me. Midwife scared me off of swaddling 🤪

Definitely have a look at the Lullaby Trust safe sleep info, lots of good stuff on there. We used grosnugs (now owned by Tommy tippee but think called the same) as they are a cross between sleeping bag and a swaddle. That and a groegg room thermometer took most of the the guesswork out of what to dress her in for bed too, so much easier!
I can't remember if it was the midwife or the HV but one of them checked the baby's sleeping arrangements on one of the home visits and the next to me with an age-appropriate sleeping bag got the thumbs up!

Definitely not a pillow duvet or duvet covers!!!

Get tommee tippee or grosnug bags from amazon or boots etc. Get a 1 tog and 2.5 tog.

I swaddled my new born when she came back from hospital with a blanket for about a week.
She then became really active in her sleep and I woke up and she had undone the swaddle. I then tucked the blanket in and put her feet to end of bed and arms over blanket that worked for a while and now she climbs out of that at 5 weeks.

We now use grow bags as I don't need to worry about her I would definitely recommend.
But they do need to be a certain weight to wear them x

Another vote for grobaga or the non-branded equivalent. No pillows or duvets needed for many months!

We used gro snugs from birth (like a cross between a swaddle and baby sleeping bag) and then moved to sleeping bag as she got older.
She is a wriggler and has been since birth so I wasn't comfortable with her having a blanket for unsupervised sleep

Mine hated swaddling, so I got a grow snug where you can stick their arms out so basically like a sleeping bag.

No duvets pillows etc until they are one which they’ll be too big for the crib anyway 🤣

Nothing. Blanket or sleeping bag, but DEFINITELY no duvet or pillows, babies sleep in a bare bed to avoid SIDS risk. It looks odd, but your baby won’t mind!

I was planning on using a cellular blanket initially and then getting a grobag once baby arrives and is big enough, is that ok?

@Pinktruffle it's not recommend as baby can kick the blanket over itself (mi e did this despite tightly tucking under the mattress. Honestly get a gro snug - you'll sleep easier because of it. Grosnugs start small and you can popper under their arms to make it fit x

@Pinktruffle cellular blankets are fine- they're cellular for a reason. I was actually advised against these swaddle thing a people are talking about from 3 visiting midwives as they can't regulate their own temperature.

Thanks @mumsofboys. I'm not a big fan of swaddling to be honest so don't think I would use the grosnugs but I will order a grobag when baby arrives, I should hopefully have it within days of the birth and a cellular blanket should be ok in the mean time then. I'll keep it tucked in.

Just in case you aren't sure the gro bags aren't swaddles, their arms stick out and their feet have loads of room.

But yeah you can use the cellular blankets. I drove myself mad tucking them back in all the time and making sure she was warm enough. And it's a faff every time you feed them and put them back (allot in the early weeks) and redoing all the tucking etc. Much easier to feed and just place down in their snugs. They also don't get cold coming out of their blankets and then back in.

Obviously entirely up to you, just don't want you thinking the gro snugs were the same as swaddling!

Slightly jumping on things here but I used cellular blankets with DD1 but am due DD2 in November and want to use a bag but am worried the neck hole will be too big with a 0-6 month bag. Anyone recommend a bag suitable for a small baby (7lbs ish)?

@Ginfilledcats I'm definitely going to get a grobag, my niece and nephew both had them (I looked after them a lot) so I know how great they are and on the whole are much easier/better than blankets.

Similar to @SqidgeBum I'm worried about head size and whether baby will be big enough to go straight in to it.

I also don't know if I'm having a boy or girl and all the unisex ones in my price bracket have been sold out when I've tried to buy them. Once baby is here I can get on it from my hospital bed

The Tommee tippee ones have a swaddle, grosnug and grobag. The swaddle obviously swaddles, the grobag has arms free and the grosnug is the in between one with the option for either.
I was looking at them a couple of days ago at Boots who are doing an offer on them. I think they also do 0-3 months so they shouldn’t swamp a newborn.

Please do check the Lullaby Trust website for sleeping guidelines. They have explained everything in detail with reasoning. Babies shouldn't have anything loose around their cot. They can overheat and/or suffocate in their sleep. Not even a teddy or bunny.

The ones we had for DD (now called gro bag snuggle) have press studs on the arm holes so baby can have their arms tucked in or left out.

They do have the weight recommendations on the website if you're worried.

Can't collect or deliver anywhere near me, or parents/inlaws!

Great advice from all...I've been wondering the same things as OP. Think grobags are the way forward.
