Have you had a successful pregnancy after a blighted ovum?

Hi all,

I found out I'm pregnant yesterday! This is my second pregnancy, my first was on my very first cycle of trying, almost exactly a year ago, after surgery for a suspected ectopic, I was told all was well then 2 weeks later told I had a blighted ovum when I "was" 8 weeks.

I had medical management of miscarriage, surgical management and then a womb infection. It was really traumatic and I'm so worried about it happening again.

What are the chances of a successful pregnancy this time around? Do my chances of miscarriage decrease or increase? Please can you share your stories of pregnancy following a blighted ovum?

Thank you Smile

Congratulations on your pregnancy and sorry you went through a blighted ovum last year. I had one as well just over a year ago, found out at ten weeks. Took me a while to recover physically and mentally (had a MC at 8 weeks prior to the blighted ovum) but we started trying again in November and I found out I was pregnant mid December. Everything has gone perfectly and I am currently 5 days overdue and in early labour waiting for my little girl to make her grand entrance 🥰 we decided to go for a couple of early, private scans for reassurance - was such a relief knowing that there was a little bean with a heartbeat early on. I may be wrong but I think blighted ovums are classed as a MC, and I don't believe one MC increases the chances of having another one at all - the odds are the same (ie in your favour for everything being fine!) good luck with the rest of your pregnancy

I found out I had a blighted ovum at my 12 week scan back in March, miscarried naturally in April (thank you Corona...). I had a CP beginning of June, and I'm now 8 weeks pregnant again. Don't get me wrong, haven't had any scans to prove otherwise, but I believe this is proceeding like a normal pregnancy as I feel absolutely horrendous and the sickness is awful. Didn't have any sickness with the BO, but had loads with my DS and this pregnancy. Taking it as a good thing.
I have been told blighted ovum is similar to a normal MC, very common, but hardly anyone talks about it, and it won't stop you having a healthy pregnancy again. Fingers are crossed for you and I'm sorry you've had to go through this 💗

@ShalomToYouJackie so sorry you have been through this.
I had this in 2016 and then went on to have a normal healthy pregnancy 2 months after. Sending you lots of luck xx

Thank you for your message and I'm sorry about your previous blighted ovum. Congratulations on your pregnancy, how exciting! How are you feeling?

I've moved to a new city since my previous pregnancy and the EPU there did regular reassurance scans for women but I don't think my local trust do that so I'll definitely be doing some private scans just to keep me sane. I would love to experience seeing a heartbeat on the screen! Thank you again and good luck with your labour ♥️

Mine was discovered at 12 week scan. Terrible. So sorry for you.

Went on to have three successful pregnancies not long afterwards- they are currently 3, 4 and 6! Good luck!

I'm only 3 weeks+5 (found out yesterday) but feeling v nauseous today, although that might just be the shock and not actually a symptom

Thank you again and wishing you all the best for your pregnancy xx

Wow, congratulations! 💐 How are you feeling?

I do need to allow myself to be happy, you're right. I'm reluctant to be as excited as I was last year because I don't want to be disappointed again but I need to relax a bit

How did things progress OP? I had a BO in July and found out I am pregnant again a few weeks ago. I’m currently 6 weeks and absolutely terrified. Full of anxiety, can’t stop crying, just can’t go through it again! 😩

I had one discovered at 12 week scan. It was my second pregnancy. I conceived quickly after and he’s now 14 and taller than me! Another successful pregnancy after that is now 10! I was told there was no increased likelihood of it happening again (although it was of course over 15 years ago).
Congrats on your pregnancy. I hope all goes smoothly for you

I had a blighted ovum in December, found out at my 12 weeks scan. Currently 19 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby. I didn't allow myself to get excited this time round at first because obviously I kept telling myself I didn't know there was actually a baby in there so paid for a 8 week private scan. You can go earlier but 8 weeks is ideal because heartbeat is deff there and it actually looks bean like like a baby. If you go much earlier you can't make much out. Good luck this time round.
