Push present - any recommendations for where to a special piece of jewellery?

We're due to have our first baby next month and my husband wants to give me a nice piece of jewellery for a push present and is quite keen on a ring, which I think would be lovely, particularly because we never buy jewellery so it would be extra special.

However, because we never buy jewellery, I'm not sure where to look to find something! He's actually found a really nice ring at Tiffany which is both stylish and everyday wearable but I'm not sure how I feel about Tiffany as a brand and it seems that if you buy something from Tiffany, you're essentially buying the brand. I don't have particularly strong feelings about it but I mostly associate it with American TV/movies, conventional girly-girls and being overly-commercialised. To be fair, the ring my husband found is modern and stylish and not noticeably from Tiffany and whilst they do seem to do some slightly tacky love-heart pendant type of jewellery, it looks like those products are aimed at teenagers.

So.. any other recommendations for where to buy something special? We're not originally from the UK so we've got a bit of a knowledge gap as to what's out there. It doesn't have to be a luxury jeweller, I'd be more than happy to support an independent brand but being a special occasion and also an unusual purchase for us, I don't want something generic and mass produced so not keen on high street chains (slightly skeptical that Tiffany might just be an overpriced version of this!).

If you're so inclined, have a look around antique jewellery shops/dealers. After looking through every single jewelry shop going, dh and I happened upon an old antiques/jewellers place and found the most beautiful ring, hidden behind a hip flask in a display cabinet. Not what I thought I wanted at all, but once I saw it, I fell in love with it - a 1940s trilogy ring (2 sapphires, 1 diamond, claw set, full platinum). I still look at it every day 4 years later and think I'm lucky to have it. I still look for other rings now and then (dh wants to get me an eternity ring), but I still haven't found anything that compares to it or that would look good next to it.

@Shmithecat2 that sounds like a great find! Normally I'd be up for looking at antique places but we're in central London with no car and we're not keen on catching public transport/Ubers this late in pregnancy with the current situation...

My EXH bought me an eternity ring in Sapphire, which was my sons birthstone! We're not longer together due to an affair, but it's my most treasured possession, and I wear it every day. The day my DS was born was the best day of my life.

Tiffany is most definitely mass produced high street stuff, but it’s very good quality. But it’s also astoundingly overpriced as you are paying for that little blue box.

I also have an eternity ring from my husband from when our DS was born (but would never refer to it as a push present). I'm not sure where my eternity ring is from, but for new good quality jewellery I do get quite a lot from Beaverbrooks.

If you're in central London with no car go and have a look round Hatton Garden. There's a lovely jewellers called Berganza that does antique/vintage pieces but plenty of other choice too!

My daughter has gorgeous blue eyes so we chose a ring with sapphires in, it's like an eternity band so no raised clasps to catch on things, i wear it on my right hand.

That’s so lovely. If you can I’d be going into an independent jewellers. I really don’t rate Tiffany’s and think it’s stupidly overpriced.
We have a great jewellers called Ian Gallachers, they have a FB page. But are based in Scotland, so a trek for you. But if you were happy not seeing it before you buy it might be an option. Good luck with the birth ♥️x

He bought an antique ring with DD birth stone so rather than the ring being for me, it’s more for her and I am just going to be looking after it on my finger for the next 16/18 years

I like the idea but personally find the name 'push present' too descriptive! It's an Americanism (along with the 'Reveal Party') that could have stayed in the USA. Historically it would be an eternity ring to celebrate the birth of your first baby and there are some beautiful ones around.

I have Tiffany wedding and engagement rings and they are stunning. That being said if I was paying for it myself I might go shopped around 😂. I got a weekend hot tub break for my push present! More of a joint present really lol.

If you don’t want antique, we got our wedding bands at Ingle & Rhode, just off Bond St. They specialise in more sustainable & fair trade products, and can tell you source information for each piece. Lovely customer service too, I hate shopping & don’t wear jewellery usually but I really enjoyed the experience! They do online too if you’re not travelling.

Receiving a ring on the birth of a first child is hardly a new or vulgar tradition.

OP, Liberty’s have a wide range of jewellery designers on their ground floor, some very affordable, many British designers. My ring is from Etsy, again a British maker, you can set the region and handmade or vintage when you search.

Another vote for Liberty if you’re in central London.

I bought my engagement ring there, there’s a range of designers from affordable to very expensive. It’s a lovely and calm oasis in the jewellery section.

Not keen on Tiffany as a brand, cliched and overpriced (sorry).

I agree with PP, regarding Hatton Gardens. I’ve received gifts for births of each of our children and we’ve gone there each time to select the general type and then my husband surprised me on the day of with what he chose. It’s a lovely experience to go and look around and also helps you narrow down what you feel would be practical and memorable. Highly recommend, rather than high street jewellers (Tiffany’s included). Plus, many of the pieces in HG have history behind them which is added bonus. Make sure if you get a piece with gems you ask for the gemologist report and classification so you’re safeguarded in your investment.
