First Trimester Iron levels

Have been feeling really wiped out, tired, pale and have pins and needles. I had issues with anaemia in my previous pregnancy and after having my son I had to have blood transfusions and treatment for months.

Have had my blood tests back from the doctor who says it's in normal range and I'm fine. Ferritin 28 and the normal range is 13-150. That sounds like a huge bracket to me? I asked my mum who's a nurse and she was taught that anything under 30 should be treated.

Does anyone else have an idea of what their iron levels were in first trimester, as I feel like the doctors are fobbing me off a bit as I feel horrible!

My haemoglobin was 118 at first blood test and I felt terrible. (115 is officially ‘low’ so I was above this threshold) I am v susceptible to anaemia, but a few iron tabs later and I’m back on top form again!

Maybe take your results to your midwife instead and ask their opinion? You need extra iron in your diet throughout pregnancy, and in my experience the anaemia got worse, so keep an eye on it x

So 28 sounds pretty low doesn't it? I have a phone appointment with midwife in a week so will mention to her.

Do you know what the ideal level for pregnancy is?

Think mine were just over 30 when I got my results at 12 weeks and I was advised to take an iron supplement :)

Quick update, have spoken to family friend who is a super experienced pharmacist.

She says the gp has read that in the old measurements not the new that came in six years ago as ideal for first trimester is 110 and I’ve to speak to the midwife about it. Also to increase my iron tablets. My levels are less than 1/4 of what they should be so no wonder I feel like death.

And the pins and needles is also a known anaemia symptom, she was surprised the doctor didn't pick up on it.

So I am going to continue with the ferrous fumerate! I knew the doctor was rushing and a bit dismissive! Felt like she thought I was being a paranoid pregnant woman and a pain.
