Were you induced with Gestational Diabetes?

Hi, with my first son and GD, I wasn't offered an induction and I don't think I had extra scans either but this was 13 years ago. I have gestational diabetes this time and my midwife said my hospital like to induce at 38 weeks, which tbh I'd sort of prefer as I'd rather have baby out before the Autumn with the covid etc. So the sooner the better. But I haven't spoken to the consultant yet... I also have a low placenta so I guess it could be a planned c section if it hasn't moved up.
I wondered how many people have been induced due to GD, and at how many weeks? Or if you needed a c section due to the placenta being too low, when this is done?
I'm at Basingstoke Hospital, thanks

I was induced at 38 weeks due to GD. Not sure about the placenta thing :)

I had GD both times but wasn't induced because I resisted it strongly. For both DC they wanted to book me in for induction at 38 weeks. I think it's part of the NICE guidelines to offer it at that time. IIRC they consider there to be a higher risk of the placenta not functioning well because of the GD, hence the early induction.

I don't know about low lying placenta but I'd imagine that if it hasn't moved to enable an induction they'll do an elective c-section at 38 weeks.

My local hospital induces you at 38 weeks if you are on medication to control your levels or at 40 weeks if you’re diet controlled.

Had GD with my first - similar to PP my trust offer induction ar 38 weeks if on medication or 40 if diet controlled. I was due to be induced at 40 weeks but had a growth scan at 39 which showed baby's abdomen measuring over the 90th centile so was offered induction same day as they had a slot available. Incidentally our trust dont induce for increased abdomen in baby anymore, that was only 2 years ago. Also had 3 weekly growth scans from 28 weeks.

I was induced with my youngest at 37+3 due to GD and reduced movements. With my eldest I had placenta précis but had moved out the way at my 36 week scan so never had to be induced. Hoping i don't have GD in this pregnancy but being tested for it at 16 weeks (1 weeks time) xx

Thanks for the replies, wonder if it will be similar at my hospital of 38 if medicated and 40 if not. I'm due the end of September and my kids are all back at school then so was sort of thinking it might reduce my worry if I was induced at 38 weeks as they'd have only been back almost 2 weeks so less chance of bringing anything home.
I have a scan at 32 weeks about the placenta and growth so will find out more then hopefully but actually it was her tummy that was around the 50th centile, I think her head and legs were near the 75th or something but somehow she came out at around the 90th centile. Although this was drawn on the chart by hand, and if it were me doing that, I'd have made it to be around the 75th centile. Seems a bit silly to have computerised measurements and then determine the overall centile by hand plotting on the graph!
I also had an issue that at my 20 week scan, I was told the placenta was up high, which she said wasn't as common actually, even turned on doppler blood flow etc. But at my 28 week scan this other lady said it must have been wrong as its low and can't move down!! So be interested to see where the placenta is next time

Yes I was induced in my due date with GD- should add that I was on medication and they didn't do early

I was told if i remained diet controlled they let me go to my due date. However baby was measuring small which can be a complication of GD so I was induced at 37+4.
I'd recommend you joking the facebook page Gestational diabetes mums uk and look at the website gestational diabetes UK. Lots of support and recipes etc very friendly 😊

I wasn't offered induction, only c section, but I think that was due to DS' measurements. In hindsight I'm glad!

I was diagnosed with GD last week at 28 weeks and I was absolutely gutted about what it meant for birth options. When I spoke to my midwife she said if I kept it diet controlled she didn't see why I couldn't have the water birth I want. The guidelines where I am are to induce at 40 +6 with GD but even then she stressed it was a guideline and not something I had to do.

Currently baby is measuring normal so if I control with diet and get to 40 +6 with baby measuring normal I can still make the decision to not be induced (obviously I will need to weigh up the risks when the time comes) and to fight my corner for water birth. Also, even if they say baby is large based on the scan its not always accurate so I will still push for no induction.
Always remember you have a choice, just because offering induction/C-section is what they generally do it doesn't mean you have to take that option. Ask questions related to YOUR pregnancy, then weigh up the risks and research to make your decision :)

I was diet controlled and would have been induced at 40 weeks. But in the end she made an appearance just before 37 weeks 🤷‍♀️

I had GD with all 3 DCs. Induced at 37 weeks with the first (diet controlled), and 38 weeks with the other two (medication controlled). Not sure why the first was a week earlier.
All were small babies. My 3rd was breech so was meant to be a c section @ 38weeks, but she flipped around two days before (brief agony, but total relief!).

Hfarm1, my midwife did say it's my choice and I think normally I'd just have extra scans more often at the end to check the placenta and wait for labour, but with the covid and my children just back to school, I'm wondering if her being here sooner rather than later would be better.
My first son where I had GD was 6pounds8 but so long I think he needed to be bigger, and the midwives asked if I was a smoker when checking my placenta, which I wasn't. So I do wonder if my placenta was black or degrading, I've now learnt you can be at more risk of placenta issues towards the end with GD. But I had no extra scans with that pregnancy.
My other boys where I just ate normally and wasn't tested, were 8 pounds, 8 pounds 6 and 8 pounds 4 but no issues with the placenta that they noted. And they were term, so it does make me think if I were induced early then this one would probably be 6 or 7 pounds

I had GD twice and was induced at 38 weeks both times. Glad I was as my placenta fell apart on my first gd delivery. I was on metformin. My dates were pushed back just over 2 weeks on the dating scan so I actually think I was closer to 41 weeks than 38. Baby was 10lb in weight too!

Wow that's scary that your placenta fell apart!!! So glad your baby was OK! I have a scan next Friday so I'm hoping I get some answers on dates, but my consultant call isn't until after my 36 week scan so perhaps they won't tell me till then

I saw my consultant every 2 weeks from 28 weeks and was happy to be induced. I was very lucky and baby was fine. I will say I had a growth scan at 37 weeks and they told me baby would be 7lb max at delivery 🤣 think the measurements were a bit out lol
