Pregnancy

90 th Percentile

Hi everyone,

I am at 30 weeks and after taking a slight tumble on the stairs, I had an ultrasound. The bub and placenta etc are all good (I'm just bruised and ashamed) but the sonographer says the baby is very large, in the 90th percentile for my size. I'm now due a test for gestational diabetes.

I have been eating a bit more than usual but I didn't think enough to cause anything like that. The midwife commented that it is adjusted to your height and weight and I am a bit of a shorty at 5ft 2 and 60kg (before pregnancy) the rest of my family are very tall 5ft 11 + including the ladies. I'm wondering if anyone has experience in this area of having a very large baby while being quite small yourself? Maybe I am in denial and need to cut down the biscuits....Hmm

Hey,

I'm a bit taller than you at about 5ft 5 but my first baby was 91st centile the whole way through, went to the midwife yesterday and she measured my bump (28 weeks) and this one is showing at 91st centile too 🤦🏻‍♀️
I've made a real effort this time to eat as well as possible (last time I just stuck to the foods that didn't make me feel sick, this time I've tried and tested different foods with mixed results) so I'm guessing I just make big babies 🤷‍♀️

My baby is on 90th percentile as well and I dont have GD.

Dont worry about what you're eating, if you dont have GD then what you're eating wont make the baby bigger or smaller!

Just some people make bigger babies I guess. You've got to have someone on the 90th percentile, otherwise it wouldnt be there at all! Doesnt necessarily mean theres anything wrong.

My 90th centile baby was actually a 25th centile baby....

Not always accurate.

My large baby (measuring 6lb4 at the 34 week scan) came out at 40+1 at 10lb. I was tested for gd twice and didnt have it. Guess I just make big babies!

Maybe you just make big babies?
Not the same, I know but all 3 of mine were bottom 10 percentiles - despite having gestational diabetes for the third one... I just made them small- maybe yours will just be big.
Also, don't trust the feeling the bump method of assessing baby's size - in labour was told DC 3 was at least 9.5 lbs and may be too big for me to deliver - they were 6.5lbs and I did deliver them naturally 😊

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully the GD test will be negative and he's just a big lad. He's 1.6 kgs at 30 weeks so hopefully he doesn't get too big! I also have a long cycle 34 days so they mentioned a chance he's a week further on than the dating. Glad to hear it's not always spot on, maybe that's what's happening. I'll stick to the fruit and salad in the meantime!

I had numerous late scans with DS (due to my age) and was told each time he was going to be a big baby. He was born at 40+5 on the 50th centile for length and weight. He did have a 75th centile head though!
