I didn't know I was pregnant

Hey!

Has anyone found out they were pregnant at a late stage in pregnancy or not knew until the stage of labour. I'm curious as to what your first sign of pregnancy was or if you felt any different thinking back to your time being pregnant.

TIA x

I'm curious as to why you are asking? What personal experience of this issue do you have? Care to share your story first, rather than expecting strangers to?

My mum went to the doctors with a lump in her breast, turns out it was a blocked milk duct and she was 7 months pregnant with me

My friend gave birth when we were on a night out and she had no idea. She was still wearing size 10 jeans and hadn’t made any lifestyle changes. Her daughter was born full term weighing a very good 8lbs too. Crazy

There’s also a thread on MN recently of a lady who didn’t know she was pregnant until she felt what she thought was maybe wind . She did a test and it was positive so she went to the midwife and had a scan and she’s 31 weeks

I didn't mean any offence by asking. My friend has just had a baby but she didn't know until labour. She wanted to hear other people's experiences because she's currently blaming herself for missing signs but I just wanted to hear real stories about if anyone has had any signs when they haven't knew. I realise everyone is different but I just wanted to hear other people's opinions.

I found out at 27 weeks
Im not big, Au size 6 and was back in the same jeans a day after dd was born. At full term i was barely a size 10. DD was born full term at 40 weeks and completely healthy, she now 10

I still had what i assumed was a period, no pain, no weight gain, no sickness, no cravings, twinges, any symptom you hear about, I didnt get it.
I was still working at carnivals and going on the rides, the big ones at that, partying, experimenting with drugs. Not one thing i did showed a sign, game me any clue. I got sick once, it was food poisoning, along with several others after we ate lunch together one day

I only found out when i did cos a mate poked me in the side to tickle me, thought i felt bloated, i was i had my period at the time but she was worried. She and her brother had found their dad a couple months before, dead from liver failure, swollen stomach, im a past heavy drinker, she was worried im about to die so went to the dr to ease her mind, thats it.
Came home with a date for rush ultrasound and the knowledge i may be about 4 or 5 months along, ultrasound showed 7

She missed nothing, her body masked it.
I didnt even feel movement like some describe, as im told the placenta was thicker at front and i carried towards the back which masks the movement

Tell her not to worry, she isnt to blame for anything, how could she be if she didnt know. She cant let herself feel guilt for things she did or didnt do. It will eat her alive
We now joke dd love of big rides is cos she went on speed 2 and a few others like it when i was pregnant
Congratulations to her

@squeekums your story is incredible !!! Our bodies are amazing , I’m 31 weeks + 3 and of it wasn’t for stories like yours and my friends , there’s no way I could even believe it’s possible to not know because I’ve had such a rough time but the woman’s body is bloomin incredible what it can do! My husband delivers babies and has delivered one of a woman who presented at a&e with pains, they scanned her and she was in labour full term!

@BruceAndMarley so many dont believe it. So many of my mates at time had already had kids and they were stunned after rough pregnancies and wouldnt have believed me if they hadnt seen me in the days/weeks leading up to finding out
I spent weeks in shock, mentally it was one of the hardest things ever as i was never even going to have kids. So a complete Uturn on my life

How do you have periods with a sealed uterus?

@firstclassflighthome where is the sealed uterus comment, I can’t see it

I found out at 24 weeks. I was 18, naive and very stupid! No morning sickness, was running pill packets back to back so wasn't expecting a "period" and had an anterior placenta so didn't feel much of anything until I found out. My son is coming up for 8 and is perfect in every way.

@Lizzy When you are pregnant, your cervix is closed and has a mucous plug. How then does the blood get out?

How do you have periods with a sealed uterus

Its not a period as such, you just assume it is.
In my case it happened as regularly and at a very similar flow to my period so in absence of any other symptoms, i assumed period, no reason not too
They never told me it was 100% xyz as it could have been a few things. But as everything was fine, they didnt probe the issue and i didnt see the need too push for it to be looked into.

www.pregnancybirthbaby.org.au/bleeding-during-pregnancy.
Top general causes here but i didnt fit/suffer from any of them, im just a freak lol
My best guess is a hormone issue in me causing the bleeding.
I was ripped off, thats supposed to be a perk of pregnancy

A friend of mine (30) had always had irregular periods so dismissed a few missed ones - but still had light 'periods' throughout. Went horseriding most days. Slight weight gain, no specific movement detected just assumed it was wind. While out horseriding had 'appendix pains' the hospital confirmed she was actually in labour and 3 hours later her 8lb full term daughter was born.
She had no idea at all and it took a week in hospital before she got over the shock but the girl is very much adored.

I'm 18 and think I might be 28 weeks pregnant and I'm a bit scared to say the least. All tests came back normal and the first 6 months I just sort of associated the symptoms of a pregnancy with a mystery illness I have. I still sort of got my periods so I didnt think I could be pregnant but the periods changed for being regular, 8 days long and heavy to either once a blue moon or 3 in a month, only lasting 2 days and really light (not normal for my body). I also had quite a lot of pregnancy symptoms that as I said, I dismissed thinking it was something else.

I'm scared to go to the doctor because I feel I will sound like an idiot for thinking I'm pregnant if the test is negative but I know it can happen so my mind is tormenting me rn. any advice?

I'm becoming scared this is me. Have been on the progesterone only pill for a year since having DS so no periods. Had nausea, exhaustion, general feeling like crap since before Christmas which seemed to disappear out of the blue end of Feb. My belly is feeling full and harder and I have put on some lockdown weight. But I'm obese so just feeling like I've let myself go further. Then last night my breast started leaking what looks like colstrum.

But I've had 4 negative pregnancy tests one of which was yesterday so just feel like I'm going insane.

I cross posted. Feeling the same, think if I go to doc without a positive test I'll just be seen as a crazy person.
I've told my OH and hes said well you've had a negative test and sort of shrugged so now feel more insane.
Sorry no advice

Sounds similar to what I am going through. Did you find out whether you were pregnant?
I could be as far as 21 weeks, have been having one day of bleeding for a period (previously would last slot longer and be more painful due to illness) I have had ALL the symptoms,… pregnancy pee tests in the first 3 months all positive - now negative, but all blood tests and scans show nothing! Multiple doctors, they all think I am making it up, they’re trying to sending me for scans on my boobs because they’re huge and growing… on top of the nausea, exhaustion, growing tummy, movement I still feel like I don’t no if I am although I know I am…. Such a scary time… a time I wish I could enjoy ❤️

I know someone in her mid-40s who didn't find out til she was 8 months along. She assumed the erratic periods were menopause mixed with grief from her mother passing away, same with the weight gain. no morning sickness. She and her husband had tried for years before giving up and agreeing to a child-free life. They were so happy but very shocked.

My husband and I were actively trying and I still didn't know til i was nearly 8 weeks (with twins) as it seems my ovulation was about a week later than we thought so when my period was late and light (implantation bleeding) i took a test but was too early to be positive. we started a round of IVF but got cancelled for non-response. four weeks later felt a bit queasy but it was hot and put it down to sun stroke. was due to start another round of IVF and took a test just in case and voila!

It's not quite as uncommon as people assume it is. Someone I was friends with at school had a full term baby she had no idea she was expecting. She went to hospital for investigation into stomach pains and came out with a healthy baby. If she had just told me herself I'd have struggled to believe her. But when she announced it on Facebook clearly no one had a clue she was pregnant, everyone she was in daily contact with was absolutely shocked.

Home pregnancy tests can go negative when you’re far enough along since the HPG levels are too high. It’s called the hook effect.
