Are partners allowed on ward yet after baby is born? (Scotland)

Apologies if this has been asked already. I’m due to give birth to my second baby by c section in 6 weeks time. I’m feeling very anxious about being left alone without my husband afterwards after a pretty negative (horrendous!!) midwifery care experience with my first child. Without going into too much detail, I was made to feel like a burden even though I tried my best to do everything myself and to get up on my feet quickly after my c section. The thought of my husband having to leave so soon after baby is born is making me feel very nervous! What is the situation like at the moment? Are husbands/partners now allowed back on wards? Would be particularly interested to hear from others from Scotland as the rules may be slightly different up here to other parts of the UK.

Thanks Smile

Hey 🤗 sorry to hear what a shit time you had last time, sounds awful!

Im due for induction next week, in Fife rules are for induction birth partner can be there start to finish but have to leave when i go to ward after birth and they can't return again until discharge to collect us.

All other births, i.e spontaneous labour partners still not allowed in till established labour (4cm) and have to leave straight away again.

C section situation unsure of tbh 🤷🏽‍♀️

Our trust in Northern Ireland have just announced that they will be moving to Phase 2 as of July 1st. They haven't said what that will be but I expect the first change would be to allow partners to visit more or stay longer, so you may see the same change coming in Scotland.

I'm in Scotland, due to have a section next week (this is my first baby). I asked my midwife last week what the situation was with birth partners and she said DH could be there in theatre for delivery and then whilst in recovery (around and hour) but must leave when I'm moved to the postnatal ward and isn't allowed back to visit.

I was wondering the same although its 10 weeks before I give birth in Glasgow. My baby is measuring very large and my placenta is also covering my cervix at the moment so it's possible I might have a c section. It's just a scary thought to be alone so quick after giving birth

Bumping this up as it’s only 3 weeks (ish) for me now! Have heard that Wishaw are allowing partners on the ward now. Any update on QEUH?

Hi , I am northern ireland but gave birth - caesarian on Sunday after failed induction. Partner was allowed in once I was in the labour ward and left post recovery from c section. He was allowed to visit from the Monday for 1 hour at set visiting time - 1 visitor only, mandatory face mask. This has just changed this week in the trust so hopefully Scotland not toofar behind

Hi. I’m in D&G and because it’s all private rooms, partners are with you the entire time and have been throughout!

I'm also due a c section in 3/ 4 weeks time, i was under the belief that the Scottish government were allowing 1 hospital visitor (with strict conditions) as of the 13th July, I messaged my maternity unit (crosshouse) on their Facebook page but they never replied. I also asked my MW last week but she didn't know either (she's not the best and doesn't ever give a straight answe!)

Thanks! It seems hospitals aren’t going to set their own rules. I had a midwife appointment at the Queen Elizabeth today and was told they have no intention of reverting back to any visiting at the moment. They said hubby can be with me for 45 mins after baby is born then meet me at reception when discharged. This is making me feel so anxious!

That should say ‘are going to set their own rules’ not ‘arent’

I'm in England but my hospital is reviewing visitation restrictions on a weekly basis. There's still potential for it to change for you.
My maternity ward has set up a Facebook page to update us on the current restrictions in place.

My friend had a baby at the QEUH 4 weeks ago and they let her husband stay for 8 hours, my other friend was the same, baby born the day before and her husband got 7 hours with her and baby, sounds like they're saying 45 minutes but not being that strict with it when it comes to the crunch 🤞🤞

@ALC1985 hurrah!! I really hope the hospitals take note now of this new legislation! I wonder if it means for a designated visiting hour or for if hubby/partners are allowed in the ward as normal. It’s promising!!

I can't believe people have gotten more than 20 mins with their hubby and baby, my first 2 babies i had at the RAH and my husband was kicked out so fast and that was without a global pandemic lol. My sister saw on twitter earlier that Nicola sturgeon said you're allowed 2 birth partners again now!

Cookie22 · 09/07/2020 18:13

@Kalesandwich wow, 20 minutes!! That’s terrible! I think it’s equally as important for the husband/partner to be able to spend time bonding with the baby after birth (though I completely understand the need for limiting visitors when the pandemic really was hitting hard). I just hope QEUH take note of these changes as my midwife was quite sure they wouldn’t be making any changes anytime soon!

The latest change from the government says that you can have 2 birth partners, 1 partner at antenatal and also 1 designated partner postnatally!! Yay xx

Thanks very much, iv got another growth scan at 36 weeks next Tues at the royal in glasgow so I really hope this is the case and my partner can attend as my doctor said at my last appointment that we would also be discussing starting me at 38 weeks at this appointment also as baby is measuring really big so it would be nice to have him present to help make the decisions. Thank you

I had growth scan at qeuh today partner not allowed in, they only allowed in for 12 and 20 week scans, need to wait outside the building and you call them to come in when you get taken.
He was allowed for my antenatal and consultant appointment, again wait outside and come in when I get taken.
They couldn't comment on other departments though as it varies apparently.

@Rachael321 I called the royal today and they said my partner can attent but just like you said he needs to wait outside until I get called. She also said to call again before I go because its changing on a daily basis at the moment. Can only hope it's still ok next week, as long as he gets in to discuss my options for induction then I'll be happy. Thanks for the update

My trust (ayrshire and arran) are now allowing 1 visitor daily for a max of 30 minutes after birth, its better than nothing!
