Hey! I've got a 16 week scan coming up (NHS) and wondered if they commonly tell you the baby's sex at this scan? Or with it being fairly early do they not like to commit? Thanks!

No they won't tell you - it's 20 weeks to be able to get the most certain result. Depending on where you live (diversity of your local community) they may not tell you at all even if you ask due to female infanticide in some cultures

Dammit (but thanks)! Do you know if you get to have another scan photo if all is well ( then I can scrutinise it with inexpert eyes and drive myself mad)?

Hi, I was told at 17 weeks (cervical length scan) that they were 95% sure I was having a boy. This was confirmed at my 20 week scan.
However with my daughter they couldn't tell me at 17 weeks as they couldn't see, but they could at the 19 week one.
Fingers crossed for you!

Oh thank you! Sounds like they're not necessarily averse to giving you an opinion/ what they think, but just might not be able to tell then. Did anyone else get told at their 16 ish week appointment please?
I'm just delighted to be pregnant so don't mind either way but it'd just be exiting to know.

I had a friend ask at a 16 week NHS scan and they wouldn't tell her.
I had a private scan at 17 weeks so OH could be with me when we found out and it was confirmed at the NHS 20 week scan.

I had a 16 ish week cervical length scan and they told me it looked like a girl but to confirm at my 20week scan where they said the same thing.

I had a private scan at 16 weeks and found out. We do not routinely have an NHS one at 16 weeks and in our local authority, they do not tell you the sex at your 20 week scan either so you have to book a private one if you want to know. Managed to find out no problem at 16 weeks.

It may also depend on the baby. DS1 was so obviously a boy even the untrained eye could see as he was obligingly on his back with his legs wide apart...I’m told though that in some parts of the country they don’t let you see the screen. We’re in Sussex and it was fine but a friend of mine in London was surprised that we were allowed to see.

Thanks everyone. Guess it could go either way then. They let me see screen at 12 weeks (was on a big tv screen on wall across from me-I guess that’s standard?) so hopefully should be able to see this time too.

I was told the sex at 13 week NHS scan. I only asked if she could guess and she says 60% sure it was a boy and showed me the boy parts. She was correct :)

You can ask at the scan.

I had a 16week NHS scan and they told me I was expecting a girl. Going to wait until my 20week scan for secondary confirmation, but that went with my nub theory and gut instinct. I think it all depends on which trust your with.
